My 84 truck has a single light above the signal light on each side. And a friend of mine also has an 84 but he has the stacked dual lights. Whats the reason for this on the same year model truck?

Just a trim level. The cheaper trim leveled trucks (custom deluxe etc) had the big single headlamps and the silverado trim level had the 4 headlamp setup.

Here is a link to some information on our trucks. I was looking for trim levels but there is also a link to the "differences" in years as well. 84 was actually the first year the lights, as mentioned, were optional. (according to this source)
