84 Chevy C10 w/ 454 out of RV wont hold idle after swapping intake and carb....

Hey guys i have a 84 chevy shortbed that has a 454 out of a winnebago, it ran decent before i swapped the stock carb and intake for a new aluminum one... i dont know if i got the distributor dropped back in right? but its acting weird

i marked the distributor rotor and where the vaccume advance was set on the valve cover, but it wouldnt drop back in that way any advice on that? and would timing cause it to start fine but not hold an idle at all?

yeah even with the dist. off by a tooth you should be able to get it to idle you may have a vacum leak

I plugged the one on the back of my carb i also put the brake booster to the top of the intake behind the carb and have my vaccume advance hooked to the front lower side of my edlebrock carb. i cant see any other vaccume ports to cause aleak this big?

And the pcv is connected to the big port on the front of my carb, it will start and run with the pedal being pressed but dies instantly and sometime backfires up thru the carb when it dies

Cuz when i turned the oil pump and got the distributor dropped where it was supppose to go it was CONSTANTLY blowing fire back thru the carb every time it was suppose to fire SOO anyways i Feel like a moron now and cant seem to figure this out lol im beatin myself up tryin to get it done

Re: 84 Chevy C10 w/ 454 out of RV wont hold idle after swapping intake and carb....

you can get a leak from where your carb mounts to the intake and from the intake to the block
I missed that you said it backfires through the carb.
first thing you need to do is bring it up to TDC and then pull and reset your distributor put a mark on your dist where #1 plug is so as you set it back in you can watch and make sure the roter is at #1 you'll need to companste for the movement of the cam and dist gears meshing

then once you get the timing set if it still wont idle start sprying your mounting surfacees with carb cleaner and see if it changes the rpms

when bringing it to TDC I must be having an issue lol cuz WOW i must have been off i held my finger over the plug hole and used a breaker bar and ratchet on the balancer and waited til i felt air escaping the hole i looked at the balancer and it was where it shoulda been but i must have mistaken the Exhaust stroke for the compression stroke

Re: 84 Chevy C10 w/ 454 out of RV wont hold idle after swapping intake and carb....

Okay guys here is what i have done 4 different times today already,

1. I pulled the distributor and the number one plug
2. Put a ratchet and breaker bar on the balancer and turn
3. Feel for air pressure escaping around my finger at the plug hole
4. Check Balancer to make sure it shows its at tdc before it begins "sucking air" into the hole
5. install distributor with the rotor pointing where #1 Is
6. checked my plug wires to make sure they are in the right spot

and attempt to fire....
now i am getting NOTHING at all... except big flames up through my carbs.... i have tried 4 different carbs all with the same effect

can anyone give me a walkthru im getting so irritated lol

This.

Rotate the engine over by hand till the timing pointer lines up at TDC again. Then re-stab the distributor firing at plug terminal one. You are 180 degrees out of time.

With a long screw driver line up the oil pump shaft and distributor gear.

Do not drop screw driver...

Put in distributor.

If it does not bottom out on intake, bump the starter so that the gears can mesh as mentioned above.

I got the timing set I think cuz now it's firing right up but still instantly dying I think it's a leak under the manifold cuz "I is stoopid" and didn't put any rtv on it because genius me thought like a carb it didn't need it
