rear sway bar kit...help!

I recently purchased a rear sway bar kit for my 59 long box. during the install I realized that there is a cross member in the way (the one that holds the shock absorbers) where the rear portion of the sway bar bolts onto the frame. I could stagger the cross member but then I wouldn't be able to use the backer plate that was provided in the kit. Has anyone else done this install or run into this problem. and btw I am running a stock rear axle and leaf setup.
