Rear End Options and Lowering
Hey everyone, I have a 1966 LWB stepside that I would like to fit with a more modern suspension / braking set up. I def want to go disk brakes up front and would like to convert to a 5x5 lug pattern. my issue is with the rear end. What do I need to do to convert my rear end to a 5x5 setup? What are some donor rear ends that I should be looking for? What types of vehicles should I be searching my junk yard for? Any advice you can give me would be appreciated. I also want to slam this truck, mostly because I don't see anyone on here with a slammed / bagged LWB step side. Thanks in advance for the replies!

Re: Rear End Options and Lowering
I am looking at doing the same thing. From what I have been told (and plan to do) you can swap the rear end from any other trailing arm style truck that has the 5 lug. Then, I plan to swap to a later crossmember, which gives you disc brakes and the 5 lug.

Re: Rear End Options and Lowering
My plan is to use an Impala SS rear since it is 5x5 to match my disc front and that gives me discs all around plus the lower gears and posi from the SS.
An easier swap would be a 71-2 trailing arm rear axle. There is a guy here in town that sells "disc swaps" that are the front cross member and matching rear axle from a 5 lug trailing arm truck. He wants WAY too much for them, but it's a bolt in swap.

Re: Rear End Options and Lowering
You can also get replacement axle shafts that convert to a 5X5" pattern. Or you can have your originals redrilled. I put a Chevelle rear in mine and had them redrilled for about $150.

Re: Rear End Options and Lowering
thats what i think i am going to do. just keep the original in there and redrill the drums. does anyone have a suggestion on getting rid of the giant hub ring protruding from the rear drum? I cant find any rims with a center bore large enough to fit around it.
