235 vs 265
I finally started taking apart my 235 in my 59 project 1/2 ton. The pistons are seized and was only able to push 2 out(they look rusted shut).
Now my buddy is willing to give me his 265(55-56) in running condition. I am not willing to cut & weld so will this just drop in? What do I need to look out for? Is the 265 a good engine? Will the front mounts work on these?

The big rub with the early 265 is that it still runs the bypass oil filter up on top like the 235 does instead of having the filter on the block like later V8 engines.

the 235 will have more grunt on the bottom end, but a good running 265 will walk all over it everywhere else. Doin' any stump pullin'?

you would use the bellhousing side mounts and and the front mounts on the front of the block. There brackets that hang off the back of the front crossmember for this, they're available at the usual suspect vendors. They can be bolted on, just use good bolts. Grade 8 hardware store stuff will do fine.

stump pulling = pulling tree stumps out of the ground. slang for extreme low end torque. factory bell housing has machined ares on each side for motor mounts. there's like ears that stick out of the frame for them, not a full crossmember under the bell housing. Holes might already be there, but you might have to do some drilling.

235 mounts thru the front crossmember. 265 will require a bracket that extends out about 4". Factory assembly manual shows them. I just made one out of 1/2" plate that bolts thru the front crossmember. You can see it in this photo. Mine was located based on the front driveline locating the transfer case/transmission, which located the motor. You would need to set your motor with a stock bellhousing then measure for the mount location.

So do you guys think a 283 is worth buying vs a free working 265? Is there that much difference?
Its my friends 265 and hes giving me complete setup with tranny and drive shaft or is worth rebuilding my 235 or purchasing 283? @OrrieG: Can the plate be made to pull engine forward to avoid space issues with firewall that ive read about or will it affect tranny mounting?

The trucks used front mounts on V8's up through 59, if I'm not mistaken. In the CARS, there were two different mount locations on the frame, one set for V8's and one set for the longer six cylinders. I looked at a 58/59 earlier with a V8, and it used the same mounts as the frame section that I got with my stock axle. I know my truck was a factory six, and it has the same mount holes, although a previous owner changed everything in putting in a V8.

To transplant a V8 into a taskforce that has a 6 cylinder, you will need the mounts all are talking about. The proper bellhousing, since the one on the 235 or 261 will not fit the V8. There is also a special setup for the accelerator linkage. I'm not sure on the 58 and 59's but the 3 previous years set the radiator support back and filled the space with a sheet metal plate.
