Questions about a five lug deal I found
Ok, I have found a full five lug swap, front and rear. The guy is looking for $400 all of it,he said he would drop the k member and give me the whole deal, and he would drop the full rear axle and give me all of that. Now I am planning on bagging this truck so that is basically the question, does it matter what year this is under b/c it looks like mine,it just has a set of z71 wheels on it,which I would get rid of in favor of a set of rally wheels with the smooth centers. He also has a decent cab that I am going to purchase as well. What do you guys think though,is this good or right on as far as price?
thanks |

Re: Questions about a five lug deal I found
I think he said the five lug setup was off a 70-71,something along those lines. It would need new rotors or have these turned. My truck is a 68, but I am about to buy a decent cab which I think is a 69-70. I am going to keep my 68 front though with 67 fenders.
The setup looks like mine on my 68 except it is 5 lug Last edited by 68c10rat; 04-24-2011 at 09:43 PM. |

Re: Questions about a five lug deal I found
well your gonna want to find out for sure what year it is so you can get the right parts for it IMHO unless all the balljoints and bushings are good you could find a better deal and get a rebuild kit for the front end but it depends on how soon you need it and how much you wanna spend kinda thing

Re: Questions about a five lug deal I found
Well I was going to offer the guy $300 for the whole setup but wants $475 for it now. He says I will have to pay him to take it out. Whatever,I'll keep shopping. Still looking for a cab too. I think I may go to a local u pull it here where I live. What year should I be looking for to get disc brakes? I want to run some decent wheels and maybe bag or at least lower it.

Re: Questions about a five lug deal I found
Tell the guy to kiss off with that attitude. Get on Craigslist and locate a 73-87 truck (up to 91 on Burbs) for a donor. Try to buy the suspension components, or buy the entire vehicle if its cheap enough. Rob what you need, and sell the rest.

Re: Questions about a five lug deal I found
Cool, thanks. Now it I just have to get out there and see what they have. Is it only the four bolts on the top to remove the entire front end from a donor truck? What in all do I need to get when I roll the front end out? Do I need to get anything else off the donor truck?

Re: Questions about a five lug deal I found
Get as much as possible.
If you can,... have them cut the frame right behind the crossmember. This way you can unbolt the master cylinder and get all the steering linkage, steering box, steel brake lines, sway bar, etc. I bought my last setup (years ago) from a guy that builds pickup bed trailers. I got the whole front section for $75.

Re: Questions about a five lug deal I found
Ok from the sticky 67-70 installing 73-87 crossmember,it says to grab the steering box, center link?not real sure, and idler arm??not real sure of that either. So does someone have pics of what I am snatching off of this truck or trucks. Im also going to try and pick up a rear end,I can get that from the same truck I presume? How could I get disc on the back or is that going to be a lot of trouble??

Re: Questions about a five lug deal I found
At the rear, anything past '72 is leaf spring and not a direct bolt in. The '71-'72 rears are 5 lug and 3/4" wider each side (1.5" total) than your '68. A '71 or '72 donor would give you front and rear 5 lug with discs up front. Up front as you've discovered there is more choice in model years that bolt in.

Re: Questions about a five lug deal I found
For the rear, you have a few choices. You can have your axles redrilled, or buy replacement axles. Some of our Forum Vendors offer them as well as Moser. You can also replace the entire axle with a 71-72 as mentioned and its a direct bolt in although they are wider. Once again the 73+ donor truck can provide you with an axle as well, but they are all leaf springs, and no provision for panhard bar.
If you want rear discs, you will need to look at aftermarket kits. Captfab sells a really simple kit, that might be of interest. Several of our Forum Vendors offer various brand kits, so you will need to research that option as well.
