Just picked up a 64 Stepside
I just got this 64 Stepside LWB. I was thinking about painting it flat or satin black with a white roof and grill. Anyone have and good suggestions?
It's a 6cyl with a 3 on the tree.... soon to be on the floor because of linkage issues |

Re: Just picked up a 64 Stepside
Welcome to the forum. If you want a reasonably cheap way to paint your truck satin, here’s a thread showing different photos of mine on post #24. The painting process is explained on posts 51 & 80. Basically using unhardened synthetic enamel thinned with acrylic enamel reducer:

That's about what I wanted to do to mine someday but now the wife wants Black Cherry and a wise friend told me to go with her choice. If she likes it she'll let me play with it more

Re: Just picked up a 64 Stepside
to the board!
Your truck is only original once. I think I would leave the exterior as is and just drive it. You will be amazed at how many more people take interest in the truck if it looks "field fresh". While I too like the look of a fresh black satin paint job, IMO, they are being overdone now adays. Take a look at this thread for some inspiration: The Patina Thread Last edited by lakeroadster; 05-10-2011 at 02:09 PM. |

Re: Just picked up a 64 Stepside
I like the "field fresh" look as well, but someone DA'd this truck a few years ago and them let some of it rust and it has curly sanding marks all over it. I wish it had that nice patina!

As to yours (jch) i think the satin black would look slick. But it actually looks pretty sharp now.

Re: Just picked up a 64 Stepside
Welcome! I've been digging the 60-66 stepsides lately. There aren't too many of them around anymore. That's why I like 'em.

Re: Just picked up a 64 Stepside
Yeah...I agree. Those are B****en wheels but, the operative word for me was *FREE* That whole setup was $100 bucks for the truck. Free wheels, and $25.00 worth of used rubber. The point of it was to get the dang thing off the trailer. We had craned it up there on 3 flats and a spare tire that only fit far enough for 2 lug nuts barely threaded on. Would have just drug it back off the trailer but I was worried about wrecking my front end....not to mention my friend's car hauler!

Re: Just picked up a 64 Stepside
Ya know, jchcomputers, i think that truck would look good in any flat color. I saw a flat red online somewhere that looked very nice on this body style.

Re: Just picked up a 64 Stepside
Stepsides Rule! Especially the long wheel base, i think this body in lwb is pretty rare, not many on here, I am running mine straight hood, no paint, rusty as hell, i am about to cut my springs and see how low i can get this thing without cutting the frame. IMHO I would leave the patina and invest the $$ into the drivetrain and suspension.
