64 chev Van 230 engine swap

Hi

i'm a newbie here,
I am considering buying a 64 Chev van (my 2nd) and was considering swaping the 230/3 spd manual to a 292/automatic.
And have some questions:

Will the 292 fit? Same engine mounts? Any problems ahead?
What would someone suggest for an autotransmission type?

I did a 283 swap (back when Moses was young and I was better looking) and had cooling problems with the v8, will there be cooling problems with the 292?

Also this may sound a bit naive, but, is there fuel injection available for the 292?

Any suggestions/ideas would be helpful.
Thanks

Re: 64 chev Van 230 engine swap

Welcome to the forum

The 292 motor mounts are offset, whereas the 230/250 have the mounts straight across. If you don't already have an auto trans, a 700R4 would be a good choice. Although getting the TV cable setup correctly could be a challenge. I do know that this wouldn't be the first 700R4 behind a I6, so someone will surely have answers on setting up the TV cable.

As for EFI on the 292, you would have to go with an aftermarket throttle body injection, such as the Holley.

If you had cooling issues with a V8 before, you likely had an improper setup cooling system, or a plugged radiator. These early vans came from the factory with small blocks, and didn't overheat.

Re: 64 chev Van 230 engine swap

TV=throttle valve

The 700R4's have this and it is often confused with a kickdown cable. If the TV cable is not correctly setup and adjusted, you will burn up the trans in a short time.

ah okay. now why is a 700r4 better than a 400th if they are both 4 speed auto?

might look into a 200r4 as well. i hear the gear ratios are better suited for the straight six.

Re: 64 chev Van 230 engine swap

There are several transmission vendors that sell a constant pressure valve body for the700r4, and the 2004r. This will fix the TV cable problem, so you will not burn up a trans because the cable is not adjusted correctly.
