4l80e/4l60e

Guys, I was just wondering. I currently have a 6.0 with a 4L80E. The transmission seems to have a converter whine. It has the correct amount of transmission fluid. Anyways, I have access to a 2500 stall converter for a 4L60E. Can I use it in my 4L80E? Just wondering!!

The 80E uses 6 bolts to the flywheel, I believe the 60e does not.

4L60E & 4L80E converters do not interchange. I would like to know more about this whine, Does it only happen in 1st gear? All the time?

Re: 4l80e/4l60e

^^^Agreed. Get that whine figured out before you are replacing more than a converter..............

Re: 4l80e/4l60e

The whine is consistent throughout each change of the gears. The whine was rather loud at one point when I first did the the new engine start up. Now that I am driving the vehicle and of course checking vehicle fluids daily, the whine is not as loud but is present It actually sounds like a real quiet gear drive, but it is definitely coming from the converter. My truck is somewhat sluggish aslo.

I do feel the tranny lock up. But, it slips in and out of lock up. Currently, the truck is being driven in town, so a lot of stopping and starting. It just really drives like I have a stall converter and it is just the original converter that came with the 4L80E.

The fluid pump can make whining noises (wore out pump) or its injesting air from a bad pump to filter seal, cracked filter housing, low fluid level or restricted cooler flow.

The converter could be bad, BUT a bad converter can & will damage the transmission.

Take it to a transmission shop & have them do a line pressure test in reverse should be at least over 250psi, If not its rebuild time.....How many miles are on your trans? 4L80Es do fail. They are VERY stout transmissions, but they dont last forever.

Clinebarger, I am very appreciable to your answer about the tranny. I do plan on having the tranny tested as you said. I will keep you posted on the outcome.
