Exclamation 5.3 or 6.0 into a 82 GMC 4x4

I am going to be doing a engine swap, the 82 4x4 GMC has the 6.2 right now, my friend wants a 5.3 or 6.0. He wants to swap just the engine, keep the original tranny. Question, what kind of tranny do this trucks come with, it is a automatic tranny. How dificult will it be, I did a swapa 4.8 vortec in a 76 ford truck, so I have some experience with these engines. Any advise, any threads that I can follow up.

Thanks for your help

4l60e is what was stock on the ls motors, 6.0's had 4l65e or 4l80 primarily

the truck is automatic, and he wants to keep the original tranny, he just wants to swap the engine. If he uses the 5.3 he neds the spacer and flywheel, but if he uses the 6.0, do I still need the flywheel and spacer.

thanks

You will need the spacer no matter what when using a LS with a older trans, unless you happen to find a 99-00 6.0 with the crank spacer built into the crank. Easy way to tell if you found one of those is it it has Iron heads.

I have this thread linked in the FAQ:

so, besides the flywheel any other problems that I might encounter. From what I read on some of the threads, I need to locate the engine in the same location, so I need to find the engine mounts that will locate the new engine in the same location.

Thanks

Re: 5.3 or 6.0 into a 82 GMC 4x4

I just did the swap a year ago into my 87, the engine mounts I got did not move the motor back far enough. I had to weld a plate on to the stock motor mount pedastals and move the stock clam shells back. I then used the plates on my 5.3 to adapt them to the stock clamshell style mounts.

Juiced, did you use Dirty Dingo mounts? I have heard they allow you to move the motor an inch or two front to back if needed.
