So, is this a concern?
What makes a gas can in the bed so different than a gas tank filler neck?
I'm just asking the question, I'm not being critical of anyones choices.

Rub a plastic fuel container with your hand or arm and you will see why this is a serious issue. This is more prevalent in a dry, non humid condition, the static generated from the plastic fuel container is unreal. I've seen this with drop-in plastic bed liners too.

Re: Show Us Your In-Bed Fuel Doors!

The two pics below show the cap as set in and the configuration of hoses to connect the cap to the tank.
The pipe on the end of the cap is 1.5" OD and the pipe at the opening of the tank is 1.75" OD. I had to use a hose that was 1.5" ID to connect to the cap and a hose that was 2" and 1.75" ID to connect to the tank. Then I used clamps to hold it all together.
It would have been so much easier had I bought the cap and had the tank spout made the correct size.

I wanted to use a locking door and found this on ebay. It opens up to a 16 gl Tanks Inc. universal tank.

Sometimes you just have to focus on the result. Now that you're done, it looks great!

"Tanks" had a booth at the Street Rod Nationals today (actually, all this weekend, in Louisville, KY). They have a lot of tank gadgetry that may interest some of us. I believe everything I saw is shown on their website.

BTW, I have found a 2" bung that is the same size as the Mustang tank filler tube. It's on my '68 GTO, which should mean that any GM "A" body of that vintage can be a donor. just cut to length, clamp it on, then get a GM cap.

THIS IS AN ERROR! The Mustang filler tube is 2-1/4". (It's hell to get old.)

Re: Show Us Your In-Bed Fuel Doors!

Hi guys;

I bought these gas cap and filler necks on e-bay, of course no instructions came with them & I'm having trouble trying to figure out how to mount them through my stake hole in the bed.

Would you recommend cutting a hole in a piece of sheet metal, fitting the bung in the hole and then tach welding it in from the bottom to keep the seam clean around the top?

Then I could weld the sheet metal into the stake hole (would probably have to cut the stake hole bigger to fit it).

I'm wondering if there may be a different way that I'm not seeing because the bung has grooves cut into it that makes me think that it somehow just might push into a hole and then get clamped from underneath to allow it to be removed later on down the line for servicing.

Help! :-)

Re: Show Us Your In-Bed Fuel Doors!

What if you cut a hole in a piece of sheet metal to fit the first little lip on the bung and tack welded from under, then cut out your stake pocket to fit your sheet metal and weld in. This i think might give you a flush mount look.

Re: Show Us Your In-Bed Fuel Doors!

The major problem with this type of fuel tank filler is that it allows some gas to get onto the bed wood. I am going to remove this and put in a billet rectangle door with a regular gas cap under the door. That way if I over fill the tank it will spill onto the tank itself instead of the bed wood. Plus the fact that I will also not have a problem with gas droplets popping out onto the bed wood. I wrap a towel around the area but it still happens. At least that has been my experience.

On mine, I'm going to combine one of these with JJ's idea above except the sink drain flange thing will be polished.

Here's the website: https://crafty-b.com/collections/all-gas-caps

They have a bunch of other more complex/bigger/EXPENSIVE options of course.

Byron, Yours looks super clean but i have a question/NOT a criticism:

Why doesnt anyone who uses the marine flange like yours route the wood the 1/8" (or whatever it is) so the face of the flange sits down flush with the wood? There must be a reason. I can't be the only one who's ever thought of it and I've literally never seen anyone do it even though a lot of guys use those flanges.

Re: Show Us Your In-Bed Fuel Doors!

I mocked up my pop up gas filler tonight. This is going in my 53 Suburban. Eventually I will replace the rotted wood with new wood so I'm figuring out where everything will go. I have had this idea for a filler for over a year so it's nice to see it come together.

I will weld a 2" piece of pipe on the bottom of the cap housing, then I will use some 2" gas hose and some clamps to join the cap to the thank filler.

I really like your choice of flush mount cap! Nice a big enough to grab onto!

Re: Show Us Your In-Bed Fuel Doors!

I'm not suggesting this is any better than what is being discussed, but since I had bought my truck with the gas filler cap in the fender, I reused the area. My choice of gas cap was from the local Harley dealership. Its a flush mount, push in and unscrew. Nice choice youngrodder!!!
