Cool 65 c20 axle swap

I have a 65 chevy with its oem axle, Iam doing a ground up restore to the pick up, I know that I will need to change the axle to get a freeway flyer. I have found a 14 bolt 1985 chevy axle on craigs list for $50. does anyone know if this will work for my needs.

1) 1965 c20 chevy truck.
2) complete restoration.
3) rebuilt 327 orginal engine
4) 700R4 transmission.
5) drum brakes.

Re: 65 c20 axle swap

Welcome to the forums.

Captainfab makes really nice 14bolt axle mounts.

I put a 14bolt in my 66.

Take a look at my thread in my siggy.

Make sure it's a single wheel 14 bolt ....the dually 14 bolt axle will be the wrong width

Re: 65 c20 axle swap

You need to find out what the gear ratio is on that 1985 rear axle. Most of the large 14 bolt rears have low gears (oftentimes, 4.10s) in them, which is not good for freeway cruising.

You've got a 700R4, which is a great thing. You could get away with a 3.73 gear, which you may be able to easily find in the 14 bolt. A 3.55 would be even better. Do you plan on towing with this truck?

But a dually is cool.
