Molasses Rust Removal

I want to post a thread dedicated to Molasses rust removal. I think it is a great, cheap, and green friendly option people should use, if is works well.
The jury is still out for me until maybe tomorrow evening when I pull the parts after 24hours in the dip.

Have been reading the boards and hearing about using molasses and water as a rust remover, I had to try it.
I have used Meratic acid, Done electrostatic rust removal, So I had to try it since it is one of the most green friendly methods if it works. Well here are the first few pics of this project.

I purchased 64 oz of Black Strap molasses from Rural King



I thought I would use the Brake Reservoir cover because it was just the first and one of the most rust ridden easy to remove parts on the truck. Yes, I did remove the rubber seal before dipping.

After only 4 hours of dip, and a light wire brushing.


Will post the rest of the project as soon as it is completed.

Umm...Sugar and water to remove rust...moisture leads to rust...ok.

Have you not heard of rust convertor before? Napa sells the best one I have used, brush it on it kills the rust and turns it back to steel. Scuff it, brush, paint it, simple.

Lets just see.
I couldn't believe it either. Why do you think I had to try it? Just for the shear fact if it worked how cool is it that molasses can remove rust. Come on man. How hilarious is that?
Have you ever tasted Molasses? It is a hell of alot more than sugar. There is an unbelievable amount of acid in it. Very bitter, and acidic. It gave me instant heart burn.
Just like Tomato sauce which can shine copper on impact.
And if it works it is like $3 per quart.
Rust converter is $50 per quart.
However, I do plan on getting the rust converter from Napa also. I think it is more appropriate for most body applications. I can't dip the truck only some parts.

vinegar $3 or less per gallon works great not all sticky gooey and hard to clean up afterwards like molasses

I got about the same response a few years ago when I posted about this.

You can get molasses at the feed store, dilute it (a lot) in a big garbage can, and have a year of fairly large scale rust removal for cheap.

BTW- Blackstrap molasses is sweet/bitter, for feed and flavoring.
Sorghum molasses is fer putting on yer biscuits n cornbread. Just ask any Southerner. Better'n honey. Good in yer grits, too.

I have heard that vinegar being acidic attacks the metal whereas molasses attacks the rust through a process called chelation.
There are large write-ups on using molasses over at the HAMB on the Jalopy Journal website.

I use vinegar for rust removal and it works great. I have not used molasses so I can't say how that works but the vinegar doesn't seem to be aggressive enough to harm the metal.

I tried vinegar and it really does work. Takes a bit of time but is really cheap and seems to work better than naval jelly. I found it for a dollar a gallon. Can't beat that! Have also used hot sauce for dipping my small carb parts in and it must be the vinegar in it but it works in a pinch. And I got it from the taco joint for free!

Taco bell Sauce Packages
