TWO Questions about A/C Compressors and brackets
. . . .
The first question is: Who sells the "small" A/C compressor that's painted BLACK, in the first picture below ? The second question is: What front, A/C bracket is pictured in the other two pictures ? The bracket I have on my original 70 350, is a lot bigger and hides the entire front of the valve cover. I seem to remember reading that there are two different brackets for two different water pumps. That small bracket seems to just attach to the head though. ( I'm going to have to re-install my large, DEAD, original A/C compressor for a while until I can buy all of the stuff to change it over - it just won't have a belt on it ) I'd like to use the smaller bracket, if possible. I'M CONFUSED !!! . . . . |

Re: TWO Questions about A/C Compressors and brackets
I have no clue to your 1st question. I have never seen one that small.
The second one is a factory setup. The third picture is missing parts. Here is my old complete setup.

Re: TWO Questions about A/C Compressors and brackets
I think the compressor in the first picture is the standard "A6" compressor, I think its an "optical illusion" making it look smaller than the others.
If your AC mounting bracket covers the entire front of the valve cover, It sounds as if you have the early brackets usually only used up to 1967 on the trucks, Sorry I do not have any pictures to compare the two styles of brackets |

Re: TWO Questions about A/C Compressors and brackets
This picture looks like it's missing the stock front bracket as well. It's not going to run long without it if it is. It does look like it has a lower bracket fitted to it though maybe.
If my memory serves me right the smaller brackets are for later model trucks. 70-72.

Re: TWO Questions about A/C Compressors and brackets
All of the pictures you posted except "your" setup (which is correct) are missing the factory upper front adjuster bracket, (quite common).
Early 60's passenger cars and Corvette used a thin upper adjuster similiar to a 67-68 upper alternator bracket These are the factory correct brackets for your truck http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/67-72...item4cf998889a These are the early passenger car and Corvette brackets (you can see the long thin upper adjuster) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1964-...item5d30798213 |

Below, is a link to a previous thread that was discussing this "KINDA", where the last post has a picture of another one without the BIG bracket. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=130114 |

Re: TWO Questions about A/C Compressors and brackets
I am not sure if the 67-68 bracket would work as it was originally bolted to the big stamped steel bracket, if it lines up with a water pump bolt hole or a head bolt hole then maybe.
Here are a couple of picture of the passenger car adjusters. http://www.autopartsobsolete.com/car...popup&id=11038 http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL68.../394498485.jpg http://www.jims59.com/65impala/image...SSengineRt.jpg |

Re: TWO Questions about A/C Compressors and brackets
. . . .
I was hoping that one of these would work - this bracket is not strong enough to hold the front of the compressor by itself ? . . . . Last edited by Steve Hafner; 09-25-2011 at 01:00 PM. |

Re: TWO Questions about A/C Compressors and brackets
Early V8 heads don't have the mounting pad and threaded holes on the front of the heads. The big brackets were needed to attach to the water pump and intake bolts on the old heads.

Re: TWO Questions about A/C Compressors and brackets
I cannot say for sure what the long term effects of not having the adjuster in question would be, it is a quite commonly missing item and I have seen many still functioning with out it.

This is the bracket I'd like to use, UNLESS the compressor is going to fall off !!! Wouldn't my 70's head have this same threaded hole in it ? ( I'm not near my truck, or I'd go look ) . . . . |

Re: TWO Questions about A/C Compressors and brackets
Most heads do have the bolt holes in the heads but some don't.

Re: TWO Questions about A/C Compressors and brackets
. . . .
I guess I'll have to wait until I get the truck back home ( MAYBE next weekend !!! ) and see what I have and go from there. As far as the smaller compressor goes, below is a "Sanden" compressor from a thread I found on this website. Is THIS the smaller type. I haven't seen one of these in black though - do they come in black ? Who sells black ones ? . . . .

Re: TWO Questions about A/C Compressors and brackets
I haven't ever seen a black one.
That doesn't mean they don't have them though!

Re: TWO Questions about A/C Compressors and brackets
I too have never seen a black one, either dull aluminum or polished,
One thing to keep in mind if you go to the Sanden compressor the factory mounting brackets will not work, your hoses will also not work, you will have to use aftermarket, I do believe the ones shown are "Vintage air" setups. |

Re: TWO Questions about A/C Compressors and brackets
. . . .
The front bracket on this one will work good. I have to get all new hoses anyway, when I change it over, mine are ALL 41 years old and haven't been used in probably 25 years. . . . . |
