I'd cry too but that's why I do my own work, although it's quite a bit shall we say...less than professional?

Labor gets you every time. Always blows me away when I see a nice ride and here the guy say how much money they have into it knowing 3/4 of that money is likely in labor.

My last professional show car stereo was over $150k and had about $30k in actual hardware and gear. 8 months of labor was a killer, but it won.

The 217 man hours is what is in question, his friends and him seem to think that is way to high......

I have about 900 or so hours in it. Probably another 200-300 to go including the bed/wood/tubs.
My build just turned 1 year last week (Sept 23).

Includes the inner and outer rockers, along with the cowls (panels under the cab corners)
Hours include a complete frame up build though.

Were these bare cabs/beds, or did you guys remove them from trucks & strip them of parts?, did you haul them around anywhere?- everything takes time. If you are only charging 217, its a bargain, IMO.

That is only 1 man for 5.5 weeks. or 2 men for short of 3 weeks. I know it is hard to fork over that kind of green, but if the job is good to excelent, your paying for that quality.

I think this was discussed earlier..tell him, he can work in the shop for 2 days, and then he can actually see how long it takes to get a panel straight and smooth.


217x60.00= $13k. I think d=for quality work, that is fair and reasonable.

I was thinking. If the customer is baulking at the cost and it's possible he won't pay for more work, then sugest that(if you can stand him in your shop) he help out to reduce some of labor the cost. Did he get and idea of how much he was in for when he brought the truck over? Maybe he and his friends are out of touch with cost of shops and suffering from sticker shock. Around here you can't get a halfway decent paint job for under 5k, and that's with no body work, just a spray over.

The 217 hrs seems light on the amount of labor it would take, however, the price of 200 hours seems on par with what this truck should cost when it's finished. For this kinda of restoration, spending $10-14k on the cab seems on par to me. (depending on your rates hourly)

217 hours is hard to believe, and seems too fast for the quality of the results. There is no room for argument on that point. Your crew obviously knows what they are doing and I'm sure they don't work cheap.
In spite of the speedy work, to invest that much money repairing a rust heap does not make good sense unless the truck has irreplaceable sentimental value, and in that case, it takes what it takes.
Complete, straight, dry trucks are still available for less than the cost of the parts and labor to fix a rusty bucket.
Good communication is so important in a situation like this. I hope it all works out. In any case, you do good work.

I had a little over 50 hours in just my floor pans and inner rockers. I quit keeping track after that, because I knew it would be too scary!

Was there a clearly lined out schedule, terms and an estimate of man hours before the job began? I know you probably don't want to put the terms out on here, but it's all relative to expectations since there are so many levels of restoration. You've obviously done a top notch job on a truck that is about as rusted as you can get without sending it to the scrap pile or cutting it up for parts. After reading through everything I was thinking you had spent 5-600 hours, or 2 people full time for approximately two months. I don't have a ton of experience doing this type of work commercially but I do appreciate the time it takes to do things correctly, like it appears you have. It looks like you're well on your way to a 20-25K resto. I see contracts in your future. Good luck!
