For you guys running the offy 4barrel intake, have any of you fabbed or purchased a carb spacer so your kick down and throttle linkage can be facing the driveside?

DLOE, here is a spacer ( I don't know what brand) I got with my used manifolds I found on craigslst. It has a simple angle iron bracket attached from linkage mounting.
I don't know if it's home fab or sold somewhere.

I have no idea if I will use this,... I just set it there so you can see it and have another idea.

Re: Tricked-out Chevy six cylinder engines

Hey Heater, thanks for the picture. I ended up purchasing a 1" cast aluminum carb spacer from trans dapt. I rotated it so the linkage was on the driver side, then drilled and countersunk the bolts to mount to the offy. Worked great, check my build thread, I posted pics last night.

Re: Tricked-out Chevy six cylinder engines

DLOE, good deal. I will check out your pic's.

I don't have my cab back on yet, so haven't address the throttle linkage yet.

Is there consensus on any performance effects of how the carb faces?? (ie, primaries/secondaries facing ) To my (sometimes wrong) mind, the carb should face away from the head, so that the primary venturi are on the furthest most point of the plenum and balanced front to back. I will check on Inliners also... T Lowe has done a ton of dyno testing, I will see what he has found scientifically.

Yeah, I'm not sure either, I may have to change it back if it's a issue, I hope not though.

If the manifold is an open plentium the carb can sit in any direction if it's closed or separated then it has to sit one way only to work right...Vernski

DLOE, as Vernski said, it is accepted that facing forwards is fine, especially with a carb spacer, and since you're already rigged up, I would not change it. Tom Lowe on inliners recommends putting the primaries away from the engine to keep the runner length to mid cylinders as long as possible- but the difference made is not much.

Re: Tricked-out Chevy six cylinder engines

ya does any one know how much better they do with the three one barrels and the long tube headers? because my 72 c20 has the 292 and but after seeing every one elses 292 i really want to try and put some money in to it and see if i can make it perform. because at times i hate that darn engine but then i dont want to be like every one else and throw in it v8 right off the bat i want to give this engine a good fare chance. since i replace the old block cuz it had a nice huge crack between cylinders 1 and 2 on the block and head and rebuilt the one thats in it now it ive put 6000 miles on it so its still new lol. and heres some pics of the heart of my old tanker

Re: Tricked-out Chevy six cylinder engines

Dragun, here's the short and sweet:

Use a small 4bll (Holley or Edelbrock) on the Offenhauser intake, use Langdon Cast Iron or long tube headers, use HEI(you are), a mild cam (Comp and Schnieder make 292 cams) and you've done the majority of improvements for the least money.

The next step is lump port the head, I suggest having Tom Lowe on Inliners.org do it.

You wanna throw more money at it?? >>> You can put in propane pistons, roller rockers (you'll need custom length pushrods) you can turbo, you can EFI, you can dump a ton of money. If you want to go that route read Santucci's book and Inliners.org

Re: Tricked-out Chevy six cylinder engines

ya i was thinking about going to Tom Lowe for his lump port kit and Head rebuild Parts kit 1.94/1.6 Valves. so why the four barrel just less tunning hassel than the three ones and are Langdon Cast Iron headers better then the tube type?

Re: Tricked-out Chevy six cylinder engines

I'm wanting to go to a dual carb setup on my 235. I'm running Fenton headers now, any advice on manifolds/carb setups? I really like to dual 1bbl with oil bath air cleaners, but how tough is this to run/keep tuned?

tom langdon has this set up but uses later model 2 barrel carbs. he sells the whole thing with linkedge etc. suppose to be a really nice set up for the early six
