409 Find!
I had a post awhile back about help on an RPO code on a 80 series truck that i found. Well it is a 1965 80 Series with 409 and 5 speed spicer transmission, and Napco 4WD. Started working on taking the motor out and I asked the owner if i could work out a deal for some other parts and he said just take what I want. So i did just that. the 409 is mainly for my dad who will put it in his 62 Impala SS and i needed a wiper motor, so i took it, got the original radio out of it. A few screws for door panels and for the glove box. Got the grille as well. Used to have sportlights in it but someone took them long ago. I was hoping since it was an 80 series truck it would have a factory tack and vac gauge but it had hydraulic breaks and no tac. Any way its a really tall, stubnosed truck. Also found the original book and owners manuals with it in the clear plastic chevrolet bag. Neat find.
Also if anyone is looking for a good set cab lights I can get the lights off this truck. In great shape one lense has a crack but they are clean. Yankee77 code if that means anything. Or if someone wants the grille from off of it There were 2 so if anyone wants one let me know. |

Model is known as a LCF.
What gauge is installed near the glove box? Emergency flasher unit is cool. Is that a seat cover or ? There was also Yankee63

Looks like theres alot of things you can pick off of it. hazard light switch. gauge cluster. horn button. Cool find man.

That gauge by the glove box is actually an hour gauge for something. And that is the original seat cover. I have been workin on that hazard switch to get it out and probably use on my 66 but not sure if i want to do all that work so if I dont, csa daddy, i will let you know. I can see what i can do with the instrument cluster as well...Does anyone know why the surround to the cluster is black? or did someone paint it that way? I had planned on taking the cluster out to see if anyone on here needed it, You can pm me a price on it of what is reasonable price. either way, i felt like a kid in a candy store around that truck

Too bad it has been picked to death, would have been a lot greater to put it back together, restore it as it was, and not break it to bits. Can't be many of them left out there. Sad.

Well the only problem is, is that he wont sell the whole truck. Why? I dont know. He wants the back half of equipment off of it, post hole digger and whatnot. It used to be an electric companies truck but he wont get rid of it all at once or else i would NOT be picking it apart. Its too unique of a truck to part but sometimes you have to do what you gotta do.

looks to have factory big truck tow hooks on the front bumper should grab those too...
the grille makes a great custom grille for a c/10, grab the whole thing.

I think I know why, right now it rolls. its like when a guy parts out a car the wheels are the last thing to go and the first thing everyone wants. once you take the wheels off, its stuck. offer to tow the thing out and put the rear equipment on a trailer for him so it stays mobile.

Tires are toast on this thing. And he wants to keep it on the truck because he has nothing else to put it on to make it functional. It was towed to his yard about 4 years ago and since then it sat since 87, at least thats the last time it was tagged. I remember it sitting in a small town near my home town they would move it around occasionally but was decommissioned from electrical work years ago. Some people just wont let go ofthings. Someone cut about 60% of the can out in the back and now theres a patch screwed to it.

Too bad there couldn't be a late night rescue mission to get, and save the whole truck. It wouldn't be quiet stealth, it'd make lots of noise.

just read the post and i dont think anyone mentioned this but that 409 is not the same as a car block... there are some differences in the internals of the block that are not he same as a car block and may not lend itself to the performance kinds of things... similar to the tall deck bb engines vs the bb car/light duty truck engines.. others can chime in as i am not a 348/409 guru by any means, but I investigated this a few years ago as a possible powerplant for a 3/4-1 ton 4x4 build I want to do... I settled on a 292 instead..... hope that added a bit of insight...

Block is different but can be used in a car. It can be put to the factory 409 cubic inch 409 horse that came in some 62 Impalas. Most people here they are a little different and dont use them. We had checked into it before we got the motor to make sure it would work. I had doubts about it as well but shouldnt be much of a problem

The 348 and the 409 were first truck engines and then they went into the cars........that may be why they are not really hi revving fast engines...but they do have torque....

You can use that 409 truck block in a car so long as you're not trying to do the numbers matching deal. The difference between the truck and the car is the truck blocks have a notch machined in the lip of the bore to lower the compression ratio. Of course if you want to run it on 91 octane pump gas this might not be a bad thing.

Those particular engines were also used in farm and industrial applications, like fixed engine irrigation water pump systems. generators, etc.

Make sure that it is a 409. It should have 2 and 1/2 inch exhausts. It is sometimes hard to tell without checking the casting number on the back of the block. I have looked at several LCF trucks with 348/409's before. A guy told me one time that he had 5 trucks with 409s in them. Well when I got there and started checking numbers he had 4 348's and 1 409. Take the plate out of the cab so you can see the casting number on back of the block before doing all of the removal work. The truck blocks do make good car engines because of the lower compression.

It is a 409. All the codes check out and the number on the block dclare it one as well. I figured it was a 348 because i have heard of several people claiming to have 409s 75gmc was saying. We did our homework on this one because its not easy getting it out of there. The owner want to put a 350 in it and get it going again once we get it out sfor some reason..He wasnt too happy when we cut a couple wires but he was more then happy to cut the radiator support and grille support etc out of the front so we can get it out sooner.
