Firewall holes, which to keep?
Hi y'all! Holidays have really taken a toll on progress, but got the truck on the ground and have a few questions please;
*ill be relocating my battery other than the engine compartment, so those holes will be sealed. * I have my classic ac system and will be digging out the template for the ac holes, so that should be easy enough. * I'd like a different linkage for the accellorator than stock, so I can close that hole. *haven't made up my mind about the windshield wiper system for rhe vacuum line. *there are not that many holes remaining. I have some sheet metal to make holes plugs, guessing a hole saws for making the various sized plugs? The steering column is just hanging there, not sure if I'll use this column out of the 72 impala. What we did was fill them all..... and then put new ones just behind the motor so all the wires were out of sight.. In the '51 i fill close to 75 + holes and on the '57 filled all most 90

If I had it to do over again I'd use bulkhead connectors like some of the others used. Check my thread for some different pics of how others have done it. You'll probably have to fill some of the original holes.

Here's mine, similar to others. I had about 50 holes to fill. Heater hose is routed inside passenger fender with bulkhead connectors. AC will be next to the battery with bulkhead connectors (don't want to have to discharge the AC if I pull the front clip in the future). Wiring will be low below vertical to sloped transition bend. Up behind the engine for that wiring, inside the frame rail to the front for lights, horn, etc. Kustombrad has some good ideas for hiding wiring using flared tubing. Flexs in the hose pic are dust, it IS black and smooth! I wanted to keep the factory recesses and ridges. The sloped portion has flat black undercoating over the paint, it is an area that gets a lot of kicked up crud.

Fill all of them and make the truck yours !!
I found some neat little nail "things" at the hardware store that are used for nailing up lathing for stucco . the nail was used for holding it in place until it was tacked then grind off the nail. these are about 1" square and about 18ga. grind fill and sand to finish, worked for me !!

I used a mechanical linkage out of a 62 donor truck. Recess is already in the rounded portion of the firewall. I just run the rod on the inside, stock has an additional pedal that snaps over the end of the rod and bolts to the floor.

Great photos and info! When welding the little plugs in place, do I weld all the way around each plug, some of the preceding photos show spot welds around each of the plugs, or those were unfinished? I knew there would be something at the hardware store to fat as plugs! Thanks again!!!!

I always spot them in first and then weld a little on each moving around until they'll all welded up.. helps keep the heat from warping the metal

weld them all up and shave that standing seam
i ran all my wires to the front clip thru the grey flex conduit next to the ac lines. older thread but i'm reading them all

I had the same question, I plan to keep the holes I need to run the harness and other cables/ wires. The ones I don't need since I'm running a alt are the holes for the regulator. Also not sure what the large holes under the heater hoses are for?
