Suburban Questions

What are things to look for when purchasing a suburban in this body style? Also what would be a fair proce for and average running driving burban with minimal rust (doors only from what I was told).

Is there an advantage to clam shell rather than barn doors?

rust. I paid $2500 for a running burb needing restoration.

$2500 is probably going to be about average for a runner with some rust. As for the rear doors, it is preference.

Make sure it has everything from the doors to the rear bumper. Nothing is made for burbs with the exception of some rubber pieces.

Are the doors the same as the doors on the trucks? He says the only real rust he has found is in the bottom of the doors. From the looks of it it looks like it may be missing the third seat as well.

from the "B" pillar forward it is pretty well the same except the roof has a different crown to it and the mounting under the "B" is different and the long floor supports are different; the ones that run from frt to back.

Make sure it has all the seats you want window latches rear bumper and all the rear doors and hardware for the rear doors are there and are in good usable condition those items are the hardest most expensive parts.
as far as rust check the roof and around the front windsheild i got my sub for 500 and it was just a roller with no seats (craigslist)

A Suburban will likely cost more than a truck in similar shape, and rightly so, as they did not make anywhere near as many. If you can find a solid, rust free driver for less than 5 G's, I think you're doing ok. You could pay a bit less up front and then spend a couple years and a few thou trying to get it to what you should have bought to begin with. It's your choice. Beyond that range, more money should equate to fewer needs.
As for the back end, I personally never could figure why anyone would prefer barn doors over a clamshell. Gates extend your load area and if needed can be driven securely in the open position (as long as you don't mind being mildly asphyxiated). Also, tailgate picnics are fun ...not so with doors.
Lastly, not all burbs had third seats. Check the number of rear sliding windows. Four sliders means it had three seats. Two sliders =no third seat.

The cargo doors (barn doors) allow a person easier access to items in the rear cargo area without having to climb onto the tailgate to reach them. I'm one of the few that like the cargo doors.

Thanks to Dino, looks like I am getting a burb. Out of all the things to look for listed this one does not have a rear bumper, has everything else though. Is there an alternate bumper that can be used for the rear?

I heard that a front bumper will work back there, and then I heard someone say that no, it will not. Recently, I came into possession of two freshly re-chromed front and rear Suburban bumpers. When laid next to each other, they appear to be the same with the exception of some notches in the edges and different hole locations. It appears as though one could fairly easily make a rear from a front with a little cutting, drilling, and filling. (before chroming or painting, obviously).
Any body done this? Or is there another difference that I did not catch?

I've looked at them, came ot the same conclusion as you, seems to be the same bumper with different mounting holes, but have not tried it.

The Suburban/Panel rear bumpers are basically the same except for the mounting hole pattern. A guy could fill the mounting holes in a front bumper and drill and file square a set of new holes. But you would also have the dimpled area around the upper bolt holes to deal with.

Actually, the dimples are there, needlessly. I'm really thinking they are the same.

I guess I should have explained myself better. What I was referring to is that if you were to fill the upper holes on a front bumper, it will be difficult to finish the welded area since it is in the dimpled area.

Looking at the pictures it seems one could probably fab up something to move the mounting holes on the frame to use the existing holes in the bumper.
