windshield seal question

I am having the windshield replaced in my 87. I purchased weather stripping for the doors and windows from LMC a couple of months ago, the windshield seal brand is Precision. The guys were out yesterday to install it. They weren't real happy when they saw I had removed the old seal and had a new one to install. They had a lot of problems getting it to fit properly and when installing the black retaining strip the main seal tore on one of the corners. They said the seal I had is very poor quality and not the first time they have had problems with them. They are going to see if they can find a used seal, they feel this is the best option.

After searching here I see others have had some problems with LMC’s windshield seal. I guess if I had to do it over I would have kept the old seal. But as it is I would prefer to use a new seal, is there a new seal out there that will work? Where can I buy one?

I bought mine from Classic Parts and have not had any problems with it.

The company that installed the windshield can get you a new seal, and they can deal with the fit. When I had mine done they replaced everything, and laid out the weep holes in the bottom edge. I had rust repairs and didn't know about the weep holes. (rust repairs were about a foot long each)

I ordered mine from Classic Parts went to install it and it was 2 inches to big so I had to cut it and make it fit the trim ring was easy to install with the tool .

LMC specializes in selling crappy parts that almost fit.

One problem can be the temperature. I did the same thing on an 84 I had it was an LMC seal and when the glass guys showed up they said they didnt want to install it because it was a new seal. I ended up putting the seal in the dryer to get it really warm and flexible and we did it in a garage where it was nice and warm. It was a little stiff going in but it went in no problem. If you can get the seal heated up it will make a huge difference because it will help it to be more flexible.

we have put a lot of these years in Using precision brand also. Sounds like LMC finally quit selling the cheap crap ,Did it come in a green package? we don't have any trouble on these years if stock.

The windshield seal I purchased from LMC is Precision brand and came in a green package. The installers basically called it junk and would not have normally used it. It was in the low 40's so that may have had something to do with the fit. I will talk to the glass place tomorrow to see if they can get a new one that will work instead of a used one.

Thats strange.If your installer thinks that the brand is junk i would question their skills. I know one of the largest auto glass companies in the usa thats been in business since 1947 and they use precision. Did they say why it was junk?? or was that just that they wanted to sell you one? I am sure 40 degrees did not help. i would have done it in a shop. Like I said we have absolutley no problem with them and thats a fact

Precision Replacement parts. I used seals from them before and never had problem with the fit. I let the seal lay close to a heat source for a couple of hours before I install. It´s a lot easier when they have had a chanse to get as soft as possible.

When I had my windshield replaced by a local discount installer they used a seal that was apparently too small for the opening - you can see the sheet metal rolled edge in the upper corners of the windshield opening. Also, the lock strip started fading after 3 months. So, I hear Softseal is the best brand but expensive and I have never used them. At least the windshield does not leak (yet), which is a problem I had with my other two squares.

I realize GM probably does not physically make them but they still sell them. Not sure for how long but still available now.
