BBC cam selection
I am currently building a 496 bbc for my 64 swb. It will be 10.2ish compression with a set of 088 rect. port GM heads. The truck will be driven on the street but not often and its weighs with me in it around 3300-3400lbs. I am running a 3.73 with 28" tires (may change to a lower gear if the rear end gives it up). Mainly building the truck for me and my son to do the local 1/8 mile index racing... wanting to do the 6.5 or maybe the 6.0 class if the truck runs well. I have been looking at cams and there are soooo many similar cams I just cant make up my mind. I was originally going to go with a Comp Cams XR286R because I have a set of valve springs with titanium retainers laying around form an old project but seeing as I am gonna street drive it I am worried about spring pressure and such. So I started looking at flat tappet solids and even some bigger hydraulic rollers and now I am lost. I am more interested in a nice flat torque curve then peak numbers. Also I really don't want to spin this motor all that high (say shifting 62-6400). It will also see Nitrous every now and then.... no more then 200 shot. Anyone build something similar and have good luck with a certain cam or should I just call a few manufacturers and see what they say? Also anyone happen to know at what lift I will need to mill my valve guide bosses down at? Thanks for any information on this.

If you go to Comp Cams web site, they have their cam quest program online. That's how I picked my solid flat tappet for my 468. The one that I picked has a nice torque curve to it too. The p/n that I picked was 11-606-5.

Wow... called comp and spoke with someone about what cam I needed.... Tells me .680 .680 260 270 @.050 on a 108 LSA, solid roller. I admit I am not a wiz with figuring out cams but that seems like alot of cam for a street driven truck on 10.2 compression.

It does sound like a lot of cam for a street driven truck. However, it is not a lot of cam to run 6.50 or 6.00 in the 1/8th mile, even with a 200 shot. My cam is .738 lift solid roller, that sees, shall we say very limited street duty. I drive it to cruise-ins locally. No more than 8-10 miles from the house, and have to run 110 on the street with 15:1 compression. You are going to have to be honest with yourself, about how fast you want to go, in relation to how streetable you want the combination to be. I hope this helps. Paul

as of right now.. this was bought for a 496 build at 10.75 to 1 that may now change... but this is what I was advised to get for a 496 street/strip with maybe spray.. I may go hyd instead.. or go 12 to 1 .. well see.. |

Yeah that's the cam I was originally planning to use. We have used it in a few motors and its a nice cam. I think I will most likely use it in this motor also. We did a 11to1 427 with oval ports with that same cam in a 72 nova a few years back and it ran 10.60's in the 1/4 on motor. Wasn't to hard on parts either, which is what I am after. I don't want to be changing springs out 2 to 3 times a year/season. The truck will be driven on the street to local car shows and meet andd greets. Maybe driven to work a hand full of times a year (20miles). I really don't see why icouldn't run the 6.5 class on motor and spray it for the 6.0 class withthe motor I am building. Only thing I see holding me back is gear ratio. Which I have a car 12bolt with 4.56's waiting to go in it...I just hate the idea of driving it any where with that ratio and a T400 tranny. Anyway, thanks for the in put.
