3/4 ton disk brakes options?
I've searched and couldn't find any solid info on this as there's not a lot of us with 3/4 TF trucks.
I want to have disk brakes up front as I'm putting a 454 under the hood. What are my options for going to disk brakes and retaining the 3/4 ton capacity? Can I do an suspension swap without grafting a different front end on there? I'd like to keep as low budget as possible (aka: boneyard parts). What do you pro's suggest? Thanks in advance!!!! |

not a pro by any means, but here's my 2 cents
that is a problem with the 3600 & 3800 trucks, unless it will fit a 3100, no one makes it. 2 options; look at the 3100 kits and make something out of jy parts with a fabbed bracket. or change to a 3100 front axle. with all the mustII swaps going on here, that should be the easy part. some places will sell you the bracket and you make the rest with jy or parts store parts

I'd scrounge up a 73/88 something (square body) 3/4 ton 4x4 front rotor. At this time you don't care if it is real good because it's for seeing if things work. Maybe a buddy with a 4x4 has an old one laying around or your buddy at the brake shop can save one for you.
You would have to match that up with your hub and then figure out how to build a caliper bracket that will bolt to the spindle. You might get one of the outfits that make the caliper brakets for rear disk swaps for 4x4's to make it or you might get one of them to make the bracket with just a center hole for the spindle shaft that you can drill to fit. Think this one with the hole for the axle and the holes to bolt it to the axle left blank so you could do the fitting. That would mean that they just didn't do those steps with their cnc cutter and you had to make it fit. The one above is for my 71 GMC 3/4 ton with a Dana 60 rear end. It uses the 73-80 4x4front rotors and caliper. I can trace you a pattern if you like and you can cut one out of plywood or some other material about 3/8 thick to see if you can make something like that work before spending money on it. |
