72 cummins build brutus ii

Hi, I am new to this side of the board. I usually hang out on the 47-59 side. I am now working on a 71-72 project that should prove interesting.
I have a 90 dodge 3/4 ton two wheel drive with a cummins to start with.
My dad bought a 90 dodge cummins four wheel drive for the frame and engine. He is working on a mid 1940s Peterbilt pick up and isn’t going to use the Transmission transfer case and axles. so he gave them to me.

The body on my dodge it pretty straight but has the usual problems of that generation cabs . it creaks and pops and the doors sag, the plastic is falling apart. you get the idea.

So here’s the plan, swap the 4WD running gear under my dodge 2WDframe and then do a body swap using the 71-72 Chevy cab fenders and bed . I have a good 71 cab and front fenders. the 72 and a 68 cab should supply enough small parts for a good start.

Re: 72 cummins build brutus ii

I am going to use the radiator core support on the 71 Chevy for a reference point. The first thing I am going to do is modify the core support to accept the dodge radiator. I am planning on making a frame out of 2” square tube and welding it into the center of the 72 core support. That way I will gain 4 ¼” length to the firewall over the stock set up. The frame will extend below and above the sides of the stock core support. Now I am thinking about making the radiator frame 3 sided with a removable top so the radiator can be removed by lifting it straight up. I am also going to use as much of the dodge air conditioning parts as possible.

Nice parts collection! This should be a cool build! It's hard to beat a 67-72 with a cummins! Good luck with it.

Thanks Ryan, it should be fun. Now i am drawing both frames so I can get an idea of where everything will go. the drop in the dodge frame is making things interesting

Re: 72 cummins build brutus ii

So far so good, All I have got done is a lot of measuring. At this point it looks like I will move the engine back about 4” to get the front wheels centered in the wheel well. That should be pretty easy because Dodge was kind enough to put a level spot behind the cross member that will be just long enough. All that has to be done is to knock the rivets out and move everything back. I think this will be easier than moving the axles forward because of the steering issues involved. But that may change later on, we will see. No matter what I do I will have to get a bit creative with the core support. I may have to mount the radiator to the right about an inch to clear the steering box.
Right now I am working on a sketch of each frame on autocad to compare the two frames. That way I can lay one over the other.

Re: 72 cummins build brutus ii

Lots of measuring lately, I have come to a decision on the cab mounts. The dodge frame is 4” wider than the Chevy and has a 4” drop under the cab that rises just ahead of the rear cab mounts.
The new front cab mount will sit even with the top of the frame at the low point at the front of the drop. At the rear the cab will need to be channeled 2.” The plan{for now}is to cut the rear cross sill out of the Chevy cab and make a new one out of 2”X4” rectangle tube. It will go all the way across from one rocker panel to the other. Then plates that drop down to pick up the bolts for easy alignment and gussets. That also allows me to put the mounts where I want .After that I can make a frame out of 1” square tube to make a shelf for the seat to sit on. If I get a seat before I make the frame I can tie the seat mounts to the frame.
On the outside back of the cab I can cut 2” out above the stock channel and raise it and piece it back together to make it look stock.

Good luck man. I saw where guys cut the floor out of a super duty and installed it in a 68 or 69 crew cab, They built a 68 I believe crew cab with a 6.0 PSD. It turned out pretty slick.

Re: 72 cummins build brutus ii

I woke up this morning thinking that I somehow wasn’t thinking right about mounting my cab on the dodge frame.
after some thought I found my error. Because of the 4” drop under the cab on the dodge frame, my front cab mount will be 2 1/8 above the top of the frame instead of the stock Chevy.
As it turns out 4” {drop} minus 2.125{cab mount} = .125 above centerline of drop minus 1” to top of rear cab mount = >875 to top of frame, That is .125 farther off the rear of the frame than the stock Chevy! That means that I won‘t have to channel the rear of the cab. If I move the cab mounts out away from the frame 2” on each side the stock Chevy cab to frame mounts should work. I still will have to do some mods to the rear cab crossmember But that should be easy.

We had some nice weather lately. still too many scattered showers to get too involved. But Got the junk cleaned out of the cab I am going to use . Now I need to wash it out to get a better look. It does look Better than I expected though there's some rust through on the floor and kick panel on the drivers side from a crappy carpet that collected water.

Now to start measuring for the front spring hangers.

Re: 72 cummins build brutus ii

I got some work done on the cab I plan on using. i have got it almost striped of removable parts. and washed out most of the crud. there is one spot of rust on the floor that may or may not be a pain we will see. over all it looks pretty good. I will need lots of cleaning up but it is the best one I have:lol

The roof is just surface rust And the floor looks worse than it is.

Re: 72 cummins build brutus ii

Yeah, I was happy to find it looking as good as it does. I think our weather is going to be good now, so it should go pretty fast with everything Removed that I can get a wrench on. once the hanger Queen moves out { 1952 Peterbilt log truck} I can get in the shop. Or At least close enough to get to the air.

A little more done today. got all the glass off and stripped the doors. the drivers door is pretty bad off rusted beat and broken where the top hinge mounts! I am not worried about that yet there will be afew options when I start that part of the build.

Thanks Ryan, My dad spends a lot of time on it.
He is building a reterbilt pickup with a older cab on a 90 dodge frame. The older cab is the same but has pop out vents like the ones on sleeper doors.
That's how I Get the parts for my project.

OOPS Got a itchy trigger finger this morning.
I will post some pics next time one of us un covers it. The older cab is the same but has pop out vents like the ones on sleeper doors.
The really mean looking cabs are the low mounts with the shorter roof. they look like they were chopped.

I missed the "t" in my post before last it should say" It should be going to work soon" I wish I were going to work soon, I lost my commercial licence because of the seasures caused by the cancer. I miss getting up in the morning and fireing those big engines up!
