1966 C10 Fleetside Project
I just got this truck over the weekend. It is in really good shape. The is very little rust through. Most of the rust you see is surface rust. I can't wait to dive into this thing and blast it apart. I did a little vin code investigating and found that it is suppose to be a stepside. i like the fleetside myself. Here are some pics and I will post updates as I go along. This is a great website, lots of good information here.

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
Thanks Guys! My plans for now is to get it running and back on the road. After that, I would love to go with a V8 conversion and a 5 speed. Disc brakes and power steering is a must. I got it for a grand which was a little more than I wanted to give. I have always wanted an early model Chevy short bed so I'm not too disappointed with what I had to pay for it. Plus the time I am saving not having to replace sheet metal is worth it. Going to drain all the fluids, make sure the fuel lines are clean, buy a battery and see if it will crank up.
What does the Deluxe Package consist of? |

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
You did great, nice truck to restore everything is there, hub caps, mirror, rear license bracket and all the other trim, missing all I see is the turn signal lever.

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
I pulled the fuel tank and found that it had some rust through on the top. I thought it was a little unusual for it to rust out there. I drained it and then took a cut off wheel and cut out the rust to weld in some patches. I shined a light into the tank and it was not good. I pulled the sending unit and it was completely rusted out. Inside the tank was thick black goo and gunk. I decided to take a cut off wheel and separate the tank. Here is what I found. I removed some of the scaling at the top with a wire wheel and I think it will clean up fine. I am going to clean it up, weld in the patches and weld it back together and see if I can salvage it. I am eventually going to take it out and install a rear tank. I'm just not ready to spend the money. It is going to be a lot of welding too but I like to weld. If I cant get it to seal properly when I'm finished I may just try to find an old mustang tank and install that for the time being.

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
Update - I got the gas tank cleaned and started welding in the patches and ran out of welding gas. Got a new tank of gas but have not had a chance to finish the welding. I have almost completely taken this truck apart. Really surprised me how easy it came apart. There is not much rust through at all. A couple small spots in the cab and a one cab corner. The bed is a different story, the header has to be replaced and rear bed sill has to be replaced. Here are a couple pics of the bad spots inside the cab on the passenger side.

Welcome to the forum. Looks like a great truck. What are your plans for it? Still has the factory pencil marks on the fire wall...pretty cool. The interior is in great shape.

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
lol, i never seen anyone seperate a gas tank before! Thats really dirty. Makes you think twice before trying to get an old vehicle running. I would be a little leary on putting that back together. Better weld it solid. I would just get another one. Or a rear setup. Nice truck tho, floors look awesome. Mine were really bad.

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
Used a wire wheel on the frame just to see how wekk it is going to clean up. Looks pretty good so far. Tried to pull the transmission out of it through the bottom but it would not clear the cab. Will borrow an engine lift tomorrow afternoon and take it out through the top. I am going to remover the cab and everything connected to the frame and take it and have it sandblasted.
