AMP draw

Was talking with Marv last night and he brought up something that I had not looked into far enough. AMP draw

I ran down a few things if others have more and they have real specs would not be a bad list maybe even a sticky

Nos first stage solenoids 10 amps per = 20

Nos second stage 30 amps per = 60

Msd analog 1 amp per thousand RPMS

Quickfuel pump 209 gph 5 amps

Yeah I went to MSD because I thought you were nuts,, but the 6AL is .7 amps per 1000, the Digital 6 and 7's are only 1.1 per 1000,, How in the heck can they make 60000+v that will knock you on your @$$ over 50 times a second (at 6k) and only draw 6 amps!!!!! Electricity really puzzles me!

Things add up really quick don't they! People don't treat a battery as it is intended,, they think it is running the car. NO!! there called "STARTING BATTERIES" . The cars electrical system is supposed to be self sufficient in that the alternator provides 100% of the power the car needs,, PLUS enough to replenish the battery after you pull 40-80 amps cranking on the starter.

Shogun has some really good tech pages on race car electrical systems. Worth a read before you start stringing wires.......

Don't forget those electric fans , they pull some juice . I am now running a CS-130 105 amp alt over the 10si .

Amen to that Hotrod, I've cooked 30amp relays with a dual 16" flex-a-lite fans and CSR water pump.
Somewhere there is a internet list of the common aftermarket electric fans and the amp draw vs the CFM. Its surprising how some are HORRIBLY power hungry and deliver so lettle. I remember Be_cool had one of the best ratings for their high flow fans, but OMG are they proud of them!!! In the long run it's probably cheaper considering allthe burned up fans, wires, relays and alternators it takes to keep the lesser efficient fans going.

O.K S-55 comes to mind as a 55 or 60 amp relay ( brand F ) I use these for my solinoids and had one on a Taurus fan set up .

Power is somewhat simple. Amps * volts = watts assuming no loss is calculated.

So your 6al is 14.4v * .7a * 6 = 60.48 watts at 6k rpm
You ignition is creating a high voltage but low amperage output to jump the arc the plug.
60.48w / 30,000v = .002a
60.48w / 60,000v = .001a

The thing a lot of people don't think about is how amperage goes up when voltage goes down. If something uses 432w (14.4@30a), it needs that same wattage. What happens when the voltage drops? 432/12.2=35.4a if your wiring, relay, and fuse are not considered here, well you have a big problem.

The amp draw the fan manufacturers list are at start up I do believe . They dont draw that continuously .

LMAO, that's an honest to gawd piece of wireing I pulled out of this Ricochet sand rail I bought. It was one piece when I started cutting it up to get it out of the car,, well... let me restate that, it was a continuous strand and all connected together when I started pulling it.

That is so very true. So many people think that when they need more electrical power in their vehicle, that they need a second battery

There are instances where a second battery is needed, but not as a replacement for an under rated alternator

LMAO,, naa Shaun it was in the sand rail I bought,, the whole car was wired that way. Apparently it's a Ricochet standard!!! UNBELIEVABLE crap!!! I ripped everything out, spent about a month doing it a little better. What was a mass of butt connected, unfused, 1/2 melted dash wiring,,,, now is at least 1/2 sensible

It isn't just the fans and what not but if you add in the normal stuff like your headlights, taillights, radio, etc. I bought one of those Powermaster Alts that come on early just so I could cruise. It puts out 100 at 1000rpm which is my idle anyway.

I also solder , die electric grease and heat shrink my connections .

Bottle heaters are power hogs also .

Well the Jegs 140 AMP one wire unit works very well. I own a vat 60 tester so I plan on seeing what it can really do. I ran a AMG 78 series battery, yada yada yada.. It RUNS!!! he he well it did for a short time. Pre made hose on the return side for the PS leaked and made a mess.. SO until I get that corrected its on to other things.

I bet those nitrous noids will be much happier with 100+ than the old 63 amp. Especially with the lights on at night races, a pair of fuel pumps, transbrake, delay box, air shifter,, oh wait..... not all that just yet <grins>

Only a small puddle of PS fluid... Pffttttt is that all!!!! Man stopping to fix something leaking at initial startup is just SOP isn't it!

Yea , seems to be that way sure glad I have a roller cam that would have been a bugger with a flat tappet .. during break in.. LOL

BTW notice in the pic I got the el cheapo stat housing to work with a top molded hose!!! I may trim just a bit more off the stat end. But it clears everything and does not leak.. Once I get this stuff done I will be swapping out to the heat shrink hose clamps.. I like the clean look.. but pricey for a one time use. Have not heard anything bad about them..
