Can someone help me understand how to exactly how a th700r4 works. Anyone have any diagrams? Or pictures? And does this picture apply to them? Thanks.

Re: Transmission Info
If you have never rebuilt a trans i would suggest taking it to a pro. There's lots of ways to screw up.

Re: Transmission Info
No can do can't afford it, plus I'd like to learn anyways. And if I screw up then I'll just have to deal with it.

Re: Transmission Info
Yeah I know it will be a big undertaking but I learn quick and usually the first time. Tools I can borrow from a couple of people. But I would rather learn how to do this than take a transmission to a shop every time something is wrong. I'd rather be self-sufficient.

Re: Transmission Info
Yes, the video is a joke. If I recall and Keith correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that was from Chrysler a number of years back.... I first saw it from one of my GM buddies too.. Definitely funny!
700's aren't too bad to do but if you don't have the proper tools for the lip seals, servo pin rod length check, end play and the ability to replace the bushings, I wouldn't mess with it. You're best off having someone help teach you that has done transmissions before or take it somwhere... You could also get one of the manuals from ATSG (Automatic Transmission Service Group). They walk you through the process and provide updates, etc. You can find them on Amazon, etc... Be sure you get the right book for the right year trans. 82-86 or 87-92 (93 and newer is 4L60E) |

Re: Transmission Info
You guys are all too serious...
Yah - the video's a joke (although that's my understanding of how an auto trans works). That was actually the sound test for a Rockwell training video. They guy did that all extemperaneously (made it up on the spot). Now - relative to rebuilding auto transmissions - I can usually replace the friction material but if it gets beyond that I have to take it to a pro. There are videos out there (I have one for a TH400) that can step you through the rebuild process. K

Get a rebuild manual!! Parts available at http://www.bulkpart.com/
You will need special tools or make your own!! Tear one apart before trying on your own tranny. |
