Caliper hanging up

I swapped out front axles on my 87 4x4 and now the right hand side caliper is not releasing.I can push it back in with a C clamp, but it won't completely release on it's own, still drags a bit. This is an older caliper I had off a parts truck.Anyone have an idea to free it up other than a new replacement?

Re: Caliper hanging up

Calipers are fairly simple mechanisms, I have rebuilt many for motorcycles and I believe automotive are nearly identical just on a larger scale. For the most part, it's one or more pistons, one or more shaped O-rings to seal each piston, the caliper housing, and then the hoses and bleeders attached on the outside.

Rebuilding them is a matter of taking them off, pulling the piston out, honing the piston bore with a fairly inexpensive tool you can buy at almost any automotive store, and then replacing the piston with new O-rings. When you get it back together, apply steady pressure to the brakes for several minutes and look for leaks. I usually don't assemble fully to check for leaks, I leave the caliper off and put a piece of hard plastic or metal about the thickness of the brake rotor between the pads so I can get a better look at it.
