?? about rear pumpkin
was underneath my 86 c/20 lookin' at the wireing for my trailer hitch and i noticed a funny looking contraption that has some sort of a lever attached to the top-side of the pumpkin's housing......it has 2 hard lines attached to it almost resembling brake lines type of lines w/ the armour spiral protective shielding....was kinda late and i did'nt bother to trace down the lines and where they go to....what in the blazes is this?? i bought this truck from an old couple who used it to pull thier fifth wheel travel trailer......the lever is attached to a bearing of some sort that pivot's along the lever's arm.anyone got any idear's?? sorry to sound so vague in the description....sound like a dduuuhhhh......!!

pumpkin
it is the proportioning valve to the rear brakes. as the weight transfers to the front of the truck the bed tends to rise on hard braking, the lever proportions brake fluid to the rear brakes to keep them from locking up.

Ding-ding-ding! We have a winner! TROYLV has the correct answer.
The rest of the story is, they often malfunction and leave you with little braking power in the rear. If you rear brakes don't seem right, give this unit a look...

These are not on all trucks...right? I don't think my 1/2 ton has one or I've never seen it.
