Re: copper exhaust for a gas engine?
if its a show car maybe but if your gonna drive it at all.forget it.same with copper brake lines and copper fuel lines.let your dad plumb a house or some thing with it.copper in the automotive world is just no good.the copper is brittle thats why its unsafe for anything other than moving water and in any vibration prone enviroment( exhaust is constantly vibrating and getting hot)it just wont hold up .plus in a week or two itll just be that ugly brown ,heavy ,cracked bad idea.that is unless its a trailer queen that never gets used.kinda sounds like somethin orange county choppers would do.

Re: copper exhaust for a gas engine?
I also work with copper on an every day basis (union Steamfitter). We use copper for a lot and the vibration doesn't matter as much as you may think. ( in response to every one saying it'll crack) brazing is good up to around 800 degrees i believe. solder around 550. and copper when heated does not get hard it softens. you could use type "M" copper which would lessen the weight being it has a thin wall. "L" being middle ground and "K" being thick wall.
As for the Clear coat issue, there is a lacquer that we have used, i have no idea the name but was good on hot water pipe around 160-180 degrees. just food for thought. Personally i'd like to do it just cause every one says you can't. |

Re: copper exhaust for a gas engine?
Let it tarnish and you'll have a green exhaust system. The statue of liberty is made out of copper, and she's solid green. The tarnish will protect it though, the natural phenomena of copper.
I wouldn't do it, but that's me. Each to their own. I remember as a kid, one day I came home to find my dad had cut up our swing set and was using the pipes to build an exhaust system for his truck. Had the torch out and was using coat hanger for filler. He had the only exhaust system I've ever seen with clowns painted on it.
