It was intro'ed in 77 but it was an option. I thought that was a sign too till I thought about it.

Re: Old Truck - FREE Wallpaper

wow, great responses, thanks everyone!

OK, thanks to the expert sleuthing, we've narrowed this to '76-'78. Here is a night shot I took using colored flash gels, but it is a similar angle and dark, so not sure if any further details will be revealed:

it is a high dynamic range photo (HDR). I shot 3 exposures, dark, normal, and light, and then used software to blend them together to bring up all the shadows which wouldve been black. thus, it takes on a surreal look.

i meant to say ridge, not ravine. The road is 50 ft above this point, out of camera view to the right. This truck missed the turn, went off the road and then came to rest at the bottom. I remember first seeing it about 8-10 yrs ago and it looked pretty fresh at the time (with tire marks all the way down the hill). now, it's been stripped by vandals and slowly decaying into the earth.

I'm with Cory. My 78 is a single tank and it's on the passenger side, not only that but it isn't the fuel door, its the exposed round fuel cap. So, I'm going with 79-80 as well.

And Mike thanks for the great pic! What are you shooting with?

it's a Pentax K5 (crop sensor) DSLR with a 15mm prime lens. The lens renders the sun as a 14-pt star with those long rays.

Re: Old Truck - FREE Wallpaper

In the second pic, the shiny spot below the door striker pin wouldn't be the VIN plate would it? IF it is, then it isn't 79-80.

Re: Old Truck - FREE Wallpaper

It seems this truck is a hodge-podge mix of everything from 73-80.

Re: Old Truck - FREE Wallpaper

you guys are the experts on the differences from year to year, but my limited knowledge tells me its a 76 or early 77. my best guess would be 76.

awsome shots though.

Re: Old Truck - FREE Wallpaper

here's a tighter shot showing the door itself, i don't have one that shows the door frame and striker pin any better than the last one but that does indeed appear to be a VIN tag partially removed.

Re: Old Truck - FREE Wallpaper

Take note of the large lower grille molding.

The sticker in the door jamb can be anything. Dealerships put all sorts of stickers in for various reasons. The sticker in question really does not look large enough to be a metal VIN tag.

But again, the truck is how old? Could be a Frankenstein, we all know there are just a few of those on the road. Hell I have one in my garage.

Just go to youtube and listen to Johnny Cash sing about it in One Piece at a Time.

Like you said Randy, This thing could have been all sorts of pieces thrown together. But the jam Vin tag on my 74 is nothing more than a blue decal, Not a metal plate.....

Re: Old Truck - FREE Wallpaper

First 2 pics are a sticker and the VIN plate from a '74 I had (had to remove the paint to see them).
Third pic is from a 79 K5 I had. The VIN plate was in the windshield, but there is still a sticker there from a dealership.
Fourth pic is from a 73, you can see the sticker above the striker, but below it is the actual VIN plate made of metal.
I *think* that the trucks with the VIN in the door jamb, had the sticker with the VIN and production date but also had the actual metal VIN plate held on with rivets below it.
I have come to one understanding, I have way to many photos of trucks on my pc!
