Buy for parts then what?

Hey yall, so while visiting Family Last week in Nevada i came across a 90's Travel Quest GMC suburban that appeared to be abandoned. So i left my card in the window asking if the guy would be willing to sell any parts. Well he contacted me today and not only would be willing to sell parts but wants to rid of the thing all together, and for under $500. Don't get me wrong the body is rough, but the interior is fine for the few things i need are in perfect/good enough to get me by shape. Also it has a 700r4 transmission which i would love to drop be hing my 6.2l diesel.

Now my question is after i strip everything i need, including transmission, i plan to sell the 454 out of it on craigslist, and possible any other parts anyone wants weather that be here, craigslist or friends. But then what can i do with the big hunk of steel? Will pick and pull buy it without a motor/tranny, or should i just take it to a scrap yard? What do yall think?

Thanks again for any advice.

Re: Buy for parts then what?

After you get everything off of it you want or think you can sell on CL, you load it up and haul it to the crusher. They weigh it and pay you per pound/ton. Most of the scrappers around here will not take them if they have tires on/in them or if the gas tank is still "whole" (they want a hole in it showing no fuel/pressure).

Not sure what your states laws are. Here to scrap one you have to have a notarized title or notarized bill of sale with your name as the buyer. If you leave the engine in it but take off say a couple of doors, interior, transmission and core support (you better save that core support) I'd guess it'd get you about $250 - $300 across the scales here.

Re: Buy for parts then what?

Yeah I called a few scrap yard today and got quotes at around 170/ton. So that's probably what I'll do. I plan to try and sell the rims so it may just be frame/body/axels and doors heading to the yard unless someone wants any of that once I list it.

Put that front clip on Cl for $300 and it will sell quick. Sell the barn doors, wheels, engine, Front bumper look's good also.

Re: Buy for parts then what?

I've never been able to get more than $200 for a loaded core support with wiring. I've also never been able to give away the barn doors or the rear doors. Well, I take that back, I did give the rear doors to Joe from one of them I parted out. Actually I think he got all 4 doors for his crew.

The gas tank and fuel lines are very sellable as is the instrument cluster if it is electronic (no speedo cable). The serpentine system on the front of the motor sells good too.

Thanks for the tips hoping the instrament cluster isn't electric and hoping for no computer either. Sure would make the transmission swap easier if it isn't.

Re: Buy for parts then what?

if it is a 1990 it will have a 700r4 or a turbo 400. 1991 got the 4l80e and all the computer crap that goes with it.

Re: Buy for parts then what?

there is a local guy here with a tow truck, he advertises on Kijiji ( like craigslist) and he makes a living removing wrecks. They prefer having enging and tranny but he usually takes them any way.
Look around and see if anyone in your area does the same.

Re: Buy for parts then what?

Just take what you want and look on CL for guys buying junk cars, they will take it. I`d love to have those doors, but I`m sure shipping wouldn`t be cheap.

Re: Buy for parts then what?

I don't think the 454 ever had a 700R-4 behind them in the Burbs, I could be mistaken though.

Re: Buy for parts then what?

A 454 never came in a 4x4 suburban 1973-1991. If it is there somebody swapped it in.

Well if I get it I'll on you and maybe we could cut a deal of just the shipping cost.
