mufflers

Trying to make up my mind on mufflers. I want a growl but don't like the drone you sometimes get with mufflers.

Any info will be greatly appreciated. Let me know what you used and the resulting sound

Turbo thrush full tail pipes out behind rear axle .....no drone...

I went from flowmasters to hooker aero chambers (both dumped before axle) and the hookers have very little drone compared to the flowmasters. And they sound better, I can actually talk on my cell while driving with the hookers.

summit racing , street strip flowmaster clones is what i just put in went from a glass pack . they sound amazing and at 29 +- a pice cant beat that .

I’ve been running Flowtech 50121 Terminator mufflers since 1991, although back then they were called Tarantula mufflers and $70 would buy two of them:

I replaced the pair once because everything else in the exhaust system wore out and they had multiple adapters welded to them, but the mufflers never wore out.

With a balance tube in the system, to me they sound just like a 60’s era Corvette. Without the balance tube they had a wicked rap at full throttle. Mine are mounted vertically in front of the rear axle with turn downs, and with or without the balance tube they’ve never droned in the cab.

run a glass pack up stream of the muffler, no drone. I had a magnaflush on my 5 cyl colorado and it sounded like someone burping in a tile mens room and drove you crazy enough to commit mufflercide on the highway. I put on a center muffler from a dodge diesel on it and it sounded much better. on my 65 I have a calsonic center muffler from a 350z and a magnaflush, and it sounds terrible, so I bought a smithys glass pack to replace the magnajunk. thats the last one I ever buy, more for the foxbody mustang guys that way.

you need to break up that long wave, thats what makes the drone is the frequency created by the pipes diameter and length. twirl a length of hose around in the air and listen, it will hit a resonant frequency.

Around here, driving with a pair of Hookers is a felony.


I like Magnaflows. Don't get the short ones, get the longer ones (21", I believe). Nice and quiet at idle and cruising speed, and they make the right noise when you're romping on it. They are made out of stainless, and dyno tests have proven that they make more horsepower than almost every other muffler out there.

I'm going with Magnaflow I hope I didn't get to big of a muffler I want to hear the cam by not to loud. The way I looked at it big motor (454) big headers
(long tube 1" 7/8) big pipe (3") equals big muffler (22"). I hope it give's me what I,m looking for.

I just put on a pair of Thrush turbos and has a good sound to it. Not to loud and the growl I was looking for. Pretty cheap at Autozone.

My Mufflers are made out of 3 1/2" OD steel driveshaft with baffles.
Old School Cool. And she's still to quiet for me.....

I replaced the rotted out 60's Maremonts with a NOS set of vintage Hush Thrush mufflers I had on the shelf. Has a nice quiet tone, but probably too quiet for most peoples tastes. Exhaust dumps before the rear wheels also.

OK guys here's my approach: Several years ago I got turned off on the sound coming from duals-basically two uneven firing 4 cyl engines. At one time I thought that sound came from heaven,but I changed. I wanted my projects to have an even firng sound that comes from a single exhaust pipe. This meant that the single had to be large to pass the volume. I started building my V8 projects with two 2 1/2 pipes that Y'ed into a single 3 in. On my 65 swb LT1 project I put two flowmasters in the 2 1/2 in section and I knew that alone would not give me the sound I wanted so I added a magnaflow in the 3 in section. In addition to the sound,this is a very free flowing system. I created a sound unlike anything I have heard. At idle and low throttle/cruise it has the sound of a stock late model vehicle(as in total sleeper). BUT when punched has the even nasty high pitched sound of a big cat that had its tail stepped on. The only thing similar in sound are my two Northstar V8 projects that have a similar single 3 in exhaust. To each his own but I could not be more pleased with my exhaust experiment.

I always found that as long as the end of the pipe was OUTSIDE the body, even a half inch, that resonance goes away. If the tails are going out back, make the tips stick out a bit past the bumper. In my experience its when you have dumps under the body/bed/ect that you get the droning/set off car alarms in the parking lot thing.

right now my 64 has no muffler and exits out the sides sounds sweet as is i can hear every cylinder firing and a low rumble at idle havnt drivin it so no report on drone but to keep cops happy im adding a glasspack after the 18th ill let ya know how it sounds
