Decisions, Decisions.....
Hey guys,
Am starting my LS swap in my 80 swb and have a couple local choices for engines that id like some opinions on. First a yard in town here has a unknown year and mileage 5.3 for 350. Nothing included. Another yard has an 04 5.3 with 90k, tested, nothing inculded for 600. The third yard has a 6.0, over 100k, tested nothing included and wants 1050. I am going to swap any of them to an ls1intake, rails ect, and will have a new harness made. The 04 I assume is DBW but i will just get an ls1throttle body and switch it (as long as i'm correct that I could do that). The truck is just my fun truck and eventually i'll put a cam in the motor and have fun but will run stock for the first year or so to make sure ive done it correctly. So, which would you choose and why? Thanks! |

Re: Decisions, Decisions.....
How far are you from Iowa?
I bought a 5.3 2004 with harness and DBW pedal and accesories from a yard in Bloomfield for $800.00. It had 84,000 miles and I watched them take it out. |

Re: Decisions, Decisions.....
Wow I never really thought of an ly6 but in looking at car-part I see that they can be had for not much more than an lq4. They also come
with l92 heads I believe. Maybe I will look that direction a little. Are you guys talking these yards down? No one has even entertained me yet in budging on price. I sure would like to go and pick up an engine before I pay for t but maybe having one shipped in would be better. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Decisions, Decisions.....
I located my engine on carparts.com,then I called and talked to the manager and told him what I wanted to do. He and I came to a agreement and everything worked out for me.

Re: Decisions, Decisions.....
I also used car-part, got my lq4 from a place a bout a half hour from me. I don't bother to haggle, unless something is missing, not as advertised or if I think its super common. Most of the time, I'll try to package stuff...get a handful of parts and bring cash, make an offer on it all. Many of these places are family owned and cash goes a long way in getting a price.

Re: Decisions, Decisions.....
Yes the LY6 has the L92 head and also no DOD just VVT which I wanted. Mine came from LKQ and they have highly motivated sales people and for the parts that I got motor and trans included I talked the guy down total would have been 3500 but i got it all for just under 2900.

Re: Decisions, Decisions.....
I'm not exactly sure what nothing included means but for a complete 5.3 from intake / coils to oil pan, 350 sounds like a good deal to me, get it cheap, pull it apart and freshen it up! For this price buy 2 of them and sell the parts you don't need from 1 of them you can easily make your money back and have extra parts in case you need them.
