Rear end fitment

I have a 66 short bed and the rear gears are way too steep. I can only cruise at 45 mph and the rpm's are 2900. The PO welded the spiders so it's also a full time posi. Instead of replacing all of the guts I can get a rear end out of the local pull it yourself yard for $100. I need to know if all of the 60 to 66 rears are the same or what rear end will bolt right in. I also have a set of 6 lug ralley wheels I want to keep for a couple years until I do a frame up resto on the truck. The yard has a 61, 62 and 63 truck in the yard so I'm hoping one of those will fit.

Hello neighbor I see you're just up in Rathdrum. Are you looking at Pull and Save? Have you tried Garwood Wrecking? They might have what you need.

To be an easy bolt in, you will want one from a '65-'70 C10. The '63 & '64 would work but they are setup for the longer panhard bar. The '71 & '72 are 5 lug. Depending on what gears you are wanting, I have one with 3.73's.

Any of the 60-66 trucks will have a 3.73 rear end, which is a pretty short ratio, taller than what you currently have but I still turn close to 3000 rpm at 60, sounds like you have something like a 4.10. I'm in the same boat, I don't wanna have to swap the guts out, Id rather just get a newer rear end and put this 47 year old unit to rest but not sure what I can swap it to.

I have been looking at Pull and Save. They seem to have everything but what I need. lol I'll give Garwood a call in the morning. You wouldn't happen to work at Kootenai Medical would you? I have seen a couple of 60-66 trucks in the parking lot lately. As you probably know all the back roads from Rathdrum into CDA are 45 MPH and it's almost unbearable to rive it to work with the gear set up in the rear end. I'm sure the 3.73's with a 700r4 would be heaven! For the next couple of years I'll stick wiith the 6 lugs that way I won't have to get new wheels and tires for a while.

No I don't work at KMC. I have my own fabrication shop off of Atlas Road. I haven't been able to drive my '66 Suburban for 2 years. No time to work on it with working 7 days a week.

For the short term, you might try putting a set of taller tires on the back. What size tires do you have on the rear now? If your engine is turning 2900 @ 45mph you must have 4.10's or 4.56's and/or short tires.

The tires are pretty low profile. I'm going out tomorrow (wed) to look for some that will fit on my rally wheels. Are you in the same area as the powder coaters?

Yes I am close to Lake City Powder Coating. I'm the first building on the right after you turn off of Atlas Rd.

I just today found out that Garwood Wrecking scrapped the big pile of rear ends that they had been collecting for years and years. They may have one still under a truck.

You could easily fit a 31-10.50R15 on those wheels. It may not be the look you want, but it will help drop your rpm's a bit.

I would follow Captain's suggestion for a 65 thru early 70.
The 60-62's trailing arm mounts won't match up to yours.

My 65 on a 62 frame has 3.90.
I bought me a 68 blazer 3.08 rearend for $50, and Capt'n is going to fab me some trailing arm mounts.

LostMy65. What made you put a 65 on a 62 frame? Wouldnt you say the 60-62 frames are more of the lone wolfs. I'm barely managing trying to upgrade to disc brakes on my 62

It was something I did back in the early 80's
I wrecked my 65 and a friend of mine had a 62 that I used as a donor.
