4l80e from a 95 van

Customer of mine stopped by today to tell me about a 70 c10 lwb truck he found, so i went and looked at it, its totally gone, and we got to talking about what i really wanted to put in my truck (5.3 or 6.0/4l60) combo.

He had on his bench a GM reman'd 4l80E with 150 miles on it. Something happened and the van it was in sat for awhile, and finally the guy sold it for parts.

Wants $100 bill for it. Garantee'd to work. My question is, is this a good tranny in place of the 4l60e i was going to use from my caprice? Will i need a different crossmember? Will if fit a 2001 and up 6.0?

Thanks
Glen

Re: 4l80e from a 95 van

Yes, It will work behind a 6.0L.
If your engine has a 60E flexplate? You need a 80E flexplate
Slide the crossmember back & drill new holes.
A 4L60E/65E harness will need to be modified, The PCM will need reflashed.

With stock to mild LS engines I use 4L60E's....But for a $100 bucks....You cant lose.

I generally dont recommend 91-96 4L80E's, But a GM "SRTA" rebuild includes all the updates. The core itself is worth a $100.

Re: 4l80e from a 95 van

Cool thank you for the info.

I don't have an engine yet, nor a harness. I was going with a 74 454 and t400, but after watching some video and builds, i'd be crazy not to run an LS.

Re: 4l80e from a 95 van

Do you need to use spacers for the 4L80E to get the flywheel to align with the torque converter like you do when swapping a pre LS transmission?

Re: 4l80e from a 95 van

I got a 2000 5.3 coming, buying a whole truck. With that being said, can i use this harness with the older 4l80e and the newer 00 5.3?

http://howellefi.com/gen-iii-vortec-...nsmission.html

I guess i'm trying to see if i should just dump this newly rebuild 95 4l80e and find something that will work with the 00 5.3.

This is quite confusing.

I do have the 95 flywheel.

Re: 4l80e from a 95 van

Finding a fresh 4l80e for a franklin would be a fabulous day for me! I paid more than that for a driveable core, then the cost of the rebuild! The 4l80e is probably my favorite tranny, as its crazy strong for a stock trans, buildable if you desire, and still has overdrive and lockup for the economy.

Have you already ordered the harness?
If you didn't, I might suggest looking up fuelinjectionconnection , they did my custom harness for a 6.0 and 4l80e, including all the fuse block and such, for a bit less than that, and it works fine with my 97 tranny and 03/04 lq4. Everything was plug and play.
I used my existing crossmember and slid it back a tiny bit to accomodate the tranny's length, then drilled some new holes and used the old hardware. Same for fixing the trans mount to the trans (2 bolt vs 1 bolt).
The trans will bolt up, though the top bolt boss won't be used.
I can't help on the flywheel/converter, tho I do know the flywheel and convertor use more bolts on the 4l80e setup, vs only 3 being used on the 4l60e setup.

If you decide you really don't want the trans, I'll give ya twice what ya paid to send it to me

Re: 4l80e from a 95 van

I will check them out, I haven't ordered anything yet. Want to get the motor here and see what I have. The flywheel and converter is my worry, I was under the assumption I need spacers, but I need to do more reading

Re: 4l80e from a 95 van

spacers for what? all you need to put that 80e behind your 5.3 is the 6.0 flexplate if i recall correctly. Also, 5.3's did not come with 80e's so your pcm will need to be reflashed. the 80e's are tough and heavy and well worth it esp. if you're pushing a lot of power. But they kill your mileage. 60e's are good for gas mileage and mild 5.3's. You can mix and match almost any gm motor with any trans. it's awesome.

edit: about the flexplate. could he just use a 6.0 flexplate to bolt it up to the 5.3? or does he HAVE to use the 5.3 flexplate and order the spacer to make it flat? either way it'll work. view my build thread in my sig, post #14 has pics of the bolts and spacer i used to mount it to a th400.

Re: 4l80e from a 95 van

I'll try the 80e first. I have one with the tranny. So if it fits the crank, then I should be golden
