Are bump stops necessary?

I have a 59 Apache with front and rear leafs. This week I took out the first and third leaf springs in the front and left the back alone. Looks great and rides a lot smoother. Unfortunately, now I have a lot less suspension travel in front and the leafs are hitting the bump stops (I think that's what they're called) on larger bumps, mostly on the driver side. It appears that these rubber monsters are about 3" thick. Am I risking anything by cutting them down a little or should I take them out completely? If it's ok to cut them, what's the best way to do it? Sawzall work? Sorry, don't have any pics right now. Can post some up in the morning if that will help.

Thanks,

JJ

I would cut them down or find a smaller one to replace it.You do need them they keep the axle from hitting the frame and causing damage to the frame.

Re: Are bump stops necessary?

its takes years of axle/frame contact to do any damage to either.

bump stops can be removed. you can cut them down, or get any of the many thicknesses off ebay.

ive even used chuncks of cut tire for 1/4 thick bumprstops

Re: Are bump stops necessary?

Thanks! Didn't want to remove or chop on them and really regret it later. Nice to have people to bounce questions off of. I appreciate the info.

Re: Are bump stops necessary?

bk2life just depends on how hard you bottom out tho,And it might not be the frame but anything hanging low can get damaged or pop a tire if it hits the fender hard enough.
