Looking for some advice. Hoping to avoid another expensive mistake!
So i'm very new to working on vehicles. The 67-72 chevy has always been my favorite vehicle and i fiinally got to try to fix one up. I was sold the truck as a 71 and quickly learned that it is a 70 after ordering some of the few things that are not interchangable. I also had a miscommunication with my local speed shop guy when ordering a lowering kit. I received a 4/6 drop instead of 1/3 drop, thought I would try it anyway but it is just to low for me and my local roads. So far I have spent alot on parts that are of little use. I have learned that just because some works on some vehicles that doesn't mean they know about all vehicles. I want now to start simple and just get a suspension refresher kit like the one from LMC that has springs, ball joints, hard ware and so and also some poly or rubber bushing. I would like some advice on which vendor and kit has good quailty, fitment and knowledgable staff, any insight would be helpfull. thanks

There is a whole lot in that first post, it is usually best to break questions up.
First, what do you mean with the 71 to 70 stuff? And how did you verify the year? If you post the VIN (or at least the first 6 digits) or the model number, we can tell you what year. What parts did you get with your drop exactly? Usually it is best to start with drop spindles, as they lower your truck without changing the geometry of the front end parts. Rear drop obviously depends on coils or leafs. There are quite a few board vendors that sell kits that will lower and update your front end parts at the same time.

Sorry about the info over load. I was just ranting on. The mix up between the years was no big deal. They let me return those parts. After that I read on the forum about how to ident the year. The ident tag looks way to new to be the original and it says it is a 67 I think.

My truck has coil read suspension and the lower kit that I got for the local shop was the hotckis 4/6 spring and shocks with the front relocation brackets

there is a difference between a 67 and 70and 71, need to find out what you have , maybe some one has did some changing over the years...

The truck does have front drum brakes and the style of grill that is in the LMC cataloge as 69-70(but im guessing that the grills are somewhat interchangable). So going by that I think it is 67-70 and the front clip looks 69-70 to me

Tag appears original to me. Are those rosette rivets? Meaning they look like a flower, as opposed to being round.
CE1471 C = 2wd E = V8 1 = 1/2 ton 4 = pickup 7 - 1967 1 = built in Oshawa Chevy grills are interchangable from 69-72. For a 1967 to take a 1970 grill the fenders and hood would need to be changed at the least. Post some pictures of your truck, we can help. Can you post a picture of the SPID tag on the inside of the glovebox door?

So i think that the rivets look round. I don't know whether rosette or round would be factory. I have some other pics of the truck that may or may not help with the ident of the year. The truck was in a front end collision (new panels can be seen from the different shades of red). So right now the front clip might not match the frame, which is fine with me. The LMC catalogue distinguishes between 67-68, 69-70, 71-72. Just want to order the correct parts.

The trim and front end say 1969/1970. Of course after 45 years a lot of things could have been changed. I am guessing you have a 1967 cab, and some parts have been swapped.
Is the cab a big back window or small? Are there side marker lights in the bed? If you can get a better photo of that SPID I bet we can get some of it figured out. Try to take a photo of each half, with a flash or at least better light. Try to get a photo of the VIN at the top of it too.

A picture of the parking brake assembly would help too. They were different between the early and late years.

One thing it say that seem wierd is the "side mounted wheel" maybe this cab used to be on a 67 step. Did step boxs ever come in LWB

Good looking truck you got there! The VIN plate looks like it has been removed as the rivets don't look factory. Maybe a cab swap was done, or removed for paint? Stepsides were made in LWB. Lots of smart people here, keep the questions coming.

Looks like somebody did the ol vin plate and title swap loose your title and need to register it, find one somebody has one laying around with the truck out behind the barn, and get them to sign over the title and take the vin plate and put it in your truck! And walla there you have it!
On the drivers side of the frame rail on the top under the cab there is vin # stamped into the frame rail. My guess is that will be the correct vin for the truck. good luck!

1st one down "sandal" 4th one down "frt & rear shocks" 5th one down "heavy **** rear" duty??? 6th one down "heat" 7th one down "turbo hydramatic" 8th one down "side mounted" 9th one down "rear" On the second picture I see these: 4th one down I see the word "stripe" 5th one down I see "duty front" 6th one down no idea 7th one down "V-8 eng" 8th one down "power steering" 9th one down "push button" 10th one down "base" Those are just the words I thought I could make out. Of course most of the lines had more words than the ones that could read.

Thanks for tip on were to find the frame VIN. I've been reading other posts that have simalar questions and it seems like there is a number on alot of different parts. Is there one for the rear end, suspension components, brakes and so on?

Sorry those pictures didn't come out real well. Not a lot better in real life though. I think the only things that seem forsure are 1. heavy duty front rear shocks 2. 350 V8 3.turbo hydramatic (I don't know if that means 350, 400 or something else) 4.side mounted wheel? orginaly a stepside ? i have no idea 5. power steering Everthing else is kinda a guess. Any thought on how to identiy the tear of the front an rear suspension and brake components? |
