Dual Snorkel - First Build Thread OHH YEAH!!!
Just as an idea one day, about 5 or 6 months ago, I talked to my dad about the possibility of a dual snorkel air breather. I did some research and here is the idea that I came up with, "Build a dual snorkel air breather and install plumbing that draws in cool air to both sides." The idea was based off of what I saw on older Corvettes and what I saw in cold air induction systems. The theory is that if I double the amount of cool air, from outside the truck, that the engine can use I can gain some modest improvements.
Will it work? I don't know, but I'm sure going to find out Picture 1 - Stock Air Breather with lid removed Picture 2 - One of the ideas thought of by the Destructive Duo Picture 3 - Finalized idea for the build after much thought and collaboration Picture 4 - Disassembly of the second air breather to get the second snorkel Picture 5 - Snorkel Removed

Re: Dual Snorkel - First Build Thread OHH YEAH!!!
Picture 1 - After the first snorkel was removed it was modified for wide open operation 100% of the time.
Picture 2 - Both snorkels have been removed; The original snorkel will be flipped over and the new snorkel will be installed in a like manner. Picture 3 - There was a snout for taking hot air off of the top of the motor in cool weather that was on the stock air breather, but was never used. Therefore it was disposed of, why not make a lightweight "sport" model? LOL Picture 4 - Using material from removed hardware to patch the hole it left, no need to waste good metal. Picture 5 - The original snorkel has had hardware removed, holes patched and it has been reattached. The hole for the second snorkel has also been cut.

Re: Dual Snorkel - First Build Thread OHH YEAH!!!
These three pics showed the final product before we tried putting it on the truck. We started Sunday afternoon and got to this point by Sunday evening. At this point we had tried several things and had no luck in getting it plumbed. We got a bit creative in the next set of pictures.

Re: Dual Snorkel - First Build Thread OHH YEAH!!!
Admittedly there is a bit of "Redneckery" going on with the plumbing job, but we had to get the truck functional for tomorrow. Anyhow, this is the final product with both sides being plumbed in such a way that cool air will be pulled in from the outside. Actually, it should pull even more air at highway speeds so hopefully I'll see some benefits in fuel mileage or maybe even hp on the top end.
What ever the performance results are, this is my build and once I get some more free cash I'll be doing some refinements to it. Those will be posted also. I can't be upset with it considering I only spent about $14 to do this mod . Any suggestions, ideas or questions? Fire away.

Re: Dual Snorkel - First Build Thread OHH YEAH!!!
I'm doing this on my other truck as well. Just need two core support mounts for the black tubing and have two of them and bam factory looking ram air. Slap on a 307 sticker and nobody would think twice about it

Re: Dual Snorkel - First Build Thread OHH YEAH!!!
What I did is I just visited an area junkyard and picked up a second assembly just like the stock breather, I also picked up some various pieces of air breather plumbing. When you start your modding be sure to use the spare air assembly to tune your welder. Doing that kept us from punching wholes in the good air breather

Yah pretty much what I'm doing. Cept mines a 78 stepper and I'm building a sleeper 383. Dumb kids imy area won't know what hit them. Other than an ugly blue/dirty vortec roller 383 dressed as a lowly 307 with headers.

Re: Dual Snorkel - First Build Thread OHH YEAH!!!
Lol I do that with my current truck lol.
I'm looking to absolutely waste everything lol. For about $2000 invested $500 of which was buying the truck. My engine is the first in depth full blueprint I've done. I'm mocking up a weld-your-own header kit to run 180* headers so it will sound like no other v8 out there. I people ask I'm just saying its a v6 lol Just being able to tell everyone that I just passed you with the transmission out of a dumptruck and a $1200 engine making a hair over 450hp and lowered for free. This engine is so easy to build I don't see why nobody offers it as a crate. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Dual Snorkel - First Build Thread OHH YEAH!!!
Nicely done. Brings back memories -
By way of background, my Dad worked for Chevrolet and used to make radiator supports, front grilles, air cleaners, oil pans, rocker arms, valve covers, etc, at Chevrolet Pressed Metal. He was always making dual snorkel air cleaners or deep sump oil pans at home for my stuff when I was growing up. His saying was "...if somebody made it the first time then I can re-make it!". Carry on the tradition, Youngburb... K

Where in Rural MO are you from?
My mom was from Kennett and my dad was from Senath (down in the "bootheel"). They, along with 3 uncles, two cousins and my in-laws all came north to work in the auto factories during the great migration of the mid 50's. K

Not sure if you will be able to see that via "seat of the pants". Also - make sure you don't go splashing around in deep water or fording streams - you will hydrolock the engine. Water is the air induction system's worst enemy. K

Re: Dual Snorkel - First Build Thread OHH YEAH!!!
Nice work. I cheated with my setup. I installed a unit from www.ramairbox.com. I also use a 81-82 bumper turn signal holes as intakes. 4" hoses connect to the box. Cold weather can cause icying in the carb. Once the carb is hot, it's not a problem.

Re: Dual Snorkel - First Build Thread OHH YEAH!!!
I did this on mine about 15 years ago using OEM parts to make it look as factory as possible. I also removed all the factory baffling inside the base to increase airflow.
Extremely effective. On cold days, after the engine sits and idles and you get it warmed up it idles fine, but if you cruise down the road for a couple miles and it's say 30 degrees outside, the carb gets cold again and doesn't want to idle when you come to a stop until it warms up some more It would even kick the choke back on when I ran a thermostat choke off the heat cross over (It's now electric so that doesn't happen anymore). On warmer days (50 and above) it's not an issue. So it's definately forcing some outside air in. I even find big bugs stuck to the air filter |

I do want to thank you Keith, AND EVERYONE, for the words of encouragement and telling/showing me your own experiences. It's good to know that the dual snorkels will do more than just add a bit of a custom look. To MRHINO - the design in which you made your set up was actually the way I had originally pictured my own, however, plans changed a bit. I know a few of you have mentioned icing problems with carbs, will I need to worry about that with it being a TBI motor?

Re: Dual Snorkel - First Build Thread OHH YEAH!!!
Icing is bad for carbs cause it can block the booster openings and idle transfer holes causing the engine to cut out. And the fuel would re condens and puddle into the intake which when the carb is really cold and the intake is cold it makes a bad mixture. Tbi shouldn't have an issue.
My cold air box on my truck helped mpg on the highway with my 305/700r4/2:73 combo. Did you cut the front plate off the mounts on the core support to allow the air to flow in directly? Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Dual Snorkel - First Build Thread OHH YEAH!!!
I've never had icing of the carb in the sense that the word might indicate.
My only issue is when it's really cold outside it might cause an idle problem when I come back to a stop at a redlight, but it has to be 30 degrees or colder. It's happening on mine because I have the idle circuit leaned to about a 14.8:1 AFR. When it's that lean it doesn't like to idle cold off the choke. Ever start a cold car up without a choke that doesn't want to idle on it's own until the engine warms up?? Same situation here. When the choke kicks on in the morning on a cold start, the issue isn't there and the carb functions as it should. I can simply fatten up the idle circuit and the issue goes away, but doing so I lose about 1 mpg in fuel economy. So I don't worry about it. Temps aren't that cold that often or for that long around here. 90% of the time it's a non issue. |

Re: Dual Snorkel - First Build Thread OHH YEAH!!!
Yah you always have to run richer in cold since the fuel does not atomize as well. Then the cold intake walls and manifold condense the fuel and it seperate a actually making the charge to lean for the engine to run. Hence why all the heat risers and exhaust crossovers.
My old Mans superbee has a 496 stroker. The holley on it has no choke and is an annular 950. I told him to use it and him trusting me it wasn't to big for the street or engine did. A few days tinkering with tunning we can start it in dead of winter and and it idles on a lope just fine. And the the throttle response is silly fast for a huge stroke engine haha. Annular a are good for high plenum/open intakes that have no heating and isolated runners, keeps the intake charge from being over atomized. Posted via Mobile Device
