needing some pulley alignment help

My problem is simply this.....the truck squeals like hell and its embarrassing to drive around because the squeal never stops and it is extremely loud....the motor in the truck is out of a 91 and its a 454 but the PO ditched the tbi and put a carb on...the truck is a 78 and used to be a diesel....I know why it squeals but I don't know what to do to fix it....the 91 motor had a serpentine belt system but the guy rigged up the old diesel v belt stuff because it was easier?....anyways u was looking for some opinions on what to do? I thought of just putting all the serpentine stuff on but can't find the parts...any ideas?

So are the belts on the V setup visually off? IIRC the only way to fix misalignment with a v belt or serpentine setup is to shim the component that's out of whack. That is, as long as you don't have a bent accessory bracket or something extreme like that. Run a straight edge off the crank pulley and measure how far each pulley is from it and that should tell you which needs a shim (or four)

Re: needing some pulley alignment help

Well visually my alternator and power steering pump are out of line....the alternator however can't be shimmed...it's set ahead of the crank pulley and can't go back anything further....also the power steering pump can't be shimmed because of how it mounts to the water pump....both are out of line by a good 2/3 of an inch

Re: needing some pulley alignment help

post some pics with a straight edge. I was wrestling with the same problem with my serpentine setup and I thought all the accessories were out, but it was my engine angle creating an optical illusion. In my case it turned out to be just one that was out. If everything is set in front of the crank pulley, you can always shim the crank pulley/balancer the same as the accessories. Worst case - put the serpentine setup back on from the j/y. Might be easier depending how far out everything is.

I'll bet the old diesel pulleys and such are different... probably just need new (gas engine) crank and WP pulleys

Re: needing some pulley alignment help

Pulle the pulley off and then you can have machinist make a spacer.
