Advice: affordable stainless muffler - no drone?

My truck will have a iron 370 cid LS3 headed engine with a 223/230 .608/.634 cam. Headers are 1 3/4" with 3" primaries. I intend to run either 2.5 or 3" mandrel exhaust with an x pipe. Can anyone recommend a good ss muffler that will not drone and annoy me in a daily driver? I work about 150yds from Kooks and can get scratch and dent mufflers for $50/ea but the volume scares me with them. Magniflows seem to expensive. Any better options?

On my C5 vette i replaced the X pipe with a Magnaflow TrueX muffler it made a HUGE differance in the drone. Check out this part #12599 from Magnaflow.

Any idea what the power difference was between the true x muffler and the x pipe with two mufflers?

For that price I would try them, but the X pipe will help with low speed drone.
Let us know how the Kooks sound

Ok so I went to see the guy who is going to be welding up my exhaust earlier today. We spent some time under the truck and hashed out a game plan. Undecided on the mufflers though. The Kooks I was planning on buying are a no go. The guy doing the welding used to work at Kooks as a R&D welder and has a set of the "Hot Rods" or the ovals on his car. He said they were going to be too loud for what I'm wanting. I need suggestions guys.

6.0L - .030 over - 10.8:1 - long tubes - 223/230 .634/.608 114+4
I want quiet idle. NO drone. Good volume when I'm in the throttle.
I want basically a Corsa Touring sound. But they don't sell just mufflers.

Well the simple things to look are are; you need a crossover in the exhaust (sounds like you have one being made up), and you need a muffler both of decent size, and decent internal construction. What I mean by that is, even the highest quality small bullet muffler will really only be a "resonator" compared to what your looking for. The large body magnaflows, borla's and such will be in the wheel house of what you want to look at.

So let me ask, do you want;
A. dual exhaust into single exit with one muffler
B. dual exhaust with one muffler and dual exit
C. dual exhaust with two mufflers and two exits
OR
D. dual exhaust setup with MORE than 1 muffler per pipe, I.E. using a resonator or pre muffler before your actual muffler to help with drone and resonance issues.

This will kind of determine what you'll want to look at. Some of the smaller profile bullet mufflers and "turbo" mufflers will work well and sound better if paired with a resonator to pull out the highway drone.


My exhaust is pretty much the 180* opposite of what your looking for. I run a true dual exhaust off of cast tbss manifolds, all the bends are sectioned instead of being bent, I run short straight through bullet mufflers with no pre muffler, right out the side. Its loud and pops on decel, it rumbles, drones on the freeway, and rattles things. It makes me smile tho.

I am ideally looking for dual exhaust: single in/single out. Two mufflers. Going to have an H pipe probably. May talk the guy into an X. As far as resonators or pre mufflers. I am hoping to just get a muffler that will fit the bill and avoid having to add anything extra to complicate things. Guessing a big bodied Borla, but I hate to turn loose of that much money on a guess.

In the long run, I think your best option would be to get the Magnaflow complete kit for our trucks. Comes with stainless mufflers and pipes with mandrel bends and an X pipe.You would have to get your guy to hook up to your headers and call it good.I have this system on my 408 powered truck and it is fairly quiet at idle with no drone and sounds awsome but not too loud at WFO. Not the cheapest option but not crazy for price for what you get.By the time you get a custom exhaust bent up I would bet it's a wash or cheaper.

Alright so if you want 2 mufflers by themselves, I'll second the idea of going with the large or medium frame Borla's or Magnaflows. Just avoid any of the product line that lists sport compact or turbo stuff, as sometimes the turbo series are just straight through, and won't provide any of what you want, no matter how large.

I think I've settled on Borla Pro XS 14". Love the sound of the XR-1 but too loud with long tubes I think.

I will definitely post a barrage of videos. The can spec is a custom Pat G grind. I asked for a can capable of 425 wheel HP and a torque monster to drive daily. Idle with nice chop and stock converter. This is what he spec'd. Everyone I talk to expects at least 430 wheel HP even through the auto. Big split big lift. Apparently magic on rectangle port heads.

I used two of these Borla mufflers. When you put them in your shopping cart they are $70.00! I have only listened to them when i test fired my Jimmy in the shop, so i don't know about the drone. I was a little worried that they were going to be too loud, but they sounded great. There are a couple of youtube videos of them.
