tilt wheel

I have a 1985 high sierra and the other day it seemed like it happened out of nowhere. where it tilts became very loose and you can move it back and forth and side to side a lot more than usual, I wanted to see if anybidy knows what this is before I take it apart.

Re: tilt wheel

There are four bolts down inside the tilt mechanism that have come loose. Not a bad job to do just take your time and keep organized.

Re: tilt wheel

What do you have to take off to get to them?

Re: tilt wheel

This is one of the best videos I have seen to do the job. If I can find it I downloaded and printed a manual a couple years ago to do it.

Lisle makes all of the specialty tools to do the job as well. I found O'reilly auto parts had all of them when I needed to do it the first time.

Re: tilt wheel

I did this last year and really love the results...best advice is plan a whole day and go slow with organization...I was a bit taken back by how far down in the 4 bolts are in the column. Good luck

Re: tilt wheel

Wow, what a job. I have a turn signal and ignition switch going bad in mine. You can actually turn the tumbler by just putting in the key. I'll just buy a new column, need a tilt anyway.
