Where did you put your spare tire?
(1965 C10)I would like to put my spare tire between the frame rails at the rear of the truck but I also am interested in moving my gas tank out of the cab. Any ideas. Where have you put your spare?

Re: Where did you put your spare tire?
In the shed.
Tire and road technology is so great today that there isn't a lot of need for a spare. If I am going on a long trip I will throw the spare in the bed, otherwise it sits in the shed.

Re: Where did you put your spare tire?
Your question is one of the issues why I retro-fitted my tank back into the cab, that the PO had moved to under the bed. I like the spare tire in the stock location.
Think carefully before you move your tank, the move creates many issues that need to have solutions engineered for like: filler location and type, spare tire location, rear tank ground clearance, etc. I like my tank behind the seat, and I like my spare under the bed, it is rarely used and out of the way. good luck

Re: Where did you put your spare tire?
If you use an original Suburban/Panel tank you can store your spare AND have a rear tank. They're not reproduced so you have to find an original one. If you get the filler neck and fill door you can then put the fill cap in your fender, not in the middle of the bed floor.

Re: Where did you put your spare tire?
VictoriaHardware, you have an pics of what the factory suburban/panel tank looks like with the spare in a truck? Or does anyone have any pics? There must be a legitimate reason having one of these tanks with spare is not chosen over the aftermarket tanks.

Re: Where did you put your spare tire?
Don't have one thats what road service is for. Since I am not going to change a tire on my diesel pusher I have road service that covers all my vehicles motor home, all three trucks, cars and Motorcycles for like 90 bucks a year. So far they win cause I have not had a single claim!!

Re: Where did you put your spare tire?
Since my truck rarely ventures far from home, for several years I just carried a can of Inflataspare in the glove box. I figured if that wouldn’t get me home I’d call AAA. Subsequently we’ve decided to take some longer trips, so I went back to carrying a spare clamped to the right front bed floor with a Camaro bracket and j bolt. Of course in my truck this is hidden under the hard cover.

Re: Where did you put your spare tire?
Mine is inside the fleetside bed using a OEM carrier. Too old to crawl underneath on the side of the road...

Re: Where did you put your spare tire?
Hope you never have to clean a rim thats had that installed. When I got my truck, It took several hours just to get one rim cleared of that instaflat in the can gunk off.

Re: Where did you put your spare tire?
I have a can in my toolbox, but I really couldn't tell you why. Even if I had a flat I wouldn't use it. That stuff doesn't always work and as mentioned above its a PITA to clean. Right now I don't have a spare in the truck, but once I get another set of tires for the extra rims I have I'll probably just leave one in the bed under the tonneau. Gotta love the 8' bed haha

Re: Where did you put your spare tire?
Here are good pictures from another thread- http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=545525 Short wheelbase pickups and Suburbans and Panels share the same basic chassis. You can see the "cutout" in the lower rear where the spare tire fits. It's a 20 gallon tank.
Below is another pirated picture showing the fill door placement. It wouldn't be hard to imagine the door area being grafted into a pickup fender- either fleet or step side. Would make for a clean installation. |

Re: Where did you put your spare tire?
I understand that on many new cars, the buyer has the option to get a spare tire---!!! Seems they use a "spare-in-a-can" of some sort as standard, and maybe cheaper(?) than if one exercises the real spare option?
Been meaning to look further into that, and prolly will as soon as I have a flat away from home. I've also been considering buying a 'space-saver' tire/wheel that is smaller & should fit into a smaller, metal suv-spare cover; maybe even have uphols. shop make an elasticized, color-coordinated custom cover to fit it, laying/lug wrench & jack into center of wheel wrapped upside down. Shouldn't look too bad lying up close to the cab. *Note to VictoriaHardware: Good idea, I think, re: fill lid--I put one in my '66 stepside, outta a van, and it really looks factory. Re: Where did you put your spare tire?
My preference is inside the Fleetside box. This was an original option. You can use a mount in the 70's and 80's though you'll need to cut the height of those. I'll be putting hubcaps on the spares to dress them up a bit. No crawling under the frame for me.

Re: Where did you put your spare tire?
I plan on putting a space-saver inside the back of the 'Burb, but also have an inflater set up to connect to the air tank, just in case. The truck will have one in the bed.

Re: Where did you put your spare tire?
I am consider trying to build a saddle tank on the drivers side but not sure how large a tank it would be. Then put a fuel door in the bed like my old 83 chevy pickup.
