LQ9 power
So I'm planning on putting a LQ9 in my '57 SWB. I was planning on striking, but a couple people have said it's no worth it. So those of you that have done a 6.0 swap, what kind of power do you get stock? How about with L92 heads, a cam, and a LS3 intake? Anyone go all the way with a stroker?
Sorry for asking but wasn't having any luck searching. Last edited by thotfulspot; 03-13-2013 at 04:53 PM. |

Re: LQ9 power
Look on the ls1tech forums. You will find tons of info.
I would say go for it. My brother is putting one in his Nova. lq9 with a cam, ported heads, and an intake.

Re: LQ9 power
I've been looking at LS1tech and it's tough to find out what parts people are using for rotating assemblies. Most I've seen are around 2K.

Re: LQ9 power
I have a LS3 block. It has a Callie's crank with Callie's rods and Weisco pistons. It runs ok..

Re: LQ9 power
LQ9 is an awesome engine as well as LQ4. I swapped a LQ4 in 84 c10 with no complaints. Don't listen to other people's negative ideas. Try our lsx forum. Plus if it wasn't worth it, why would there be so many LS swaps?

Re: LQ9 power
If you are going to stroke it and swap all those parts out just start with an lq4. same basic parts but a decent bit cheaper. Main differences between the two are the dished vs flat pistons which bump up the compression.

Re: LQ9 power
HotRod built an LQ4 with L92/LS3 heads, cam, longtubes, and it made right around 550 at the flywheel.
That's my same basic setup + turbo. Shooting for 700+ rwhp.

Re: LQ9 power
I saw another guy with a cam and ported/decked heads on a lq4 making 450 at the flywheel.

This is the LQ4 with the stock 317 heads. Plenty of torque off idle...haha. Shreds the tires at will by just flat footing it off idle...and it's only got a 3.42 gear in it. Granted, the converter helps a bunch....but you should not be lacking any off idle torque with the twin screw.

Re: LQ9 power
Those are different than I saw. Doesn't really matter. There is no standalone controller. It needs to interface with a Gen IV wiring harness. Huge difference in parts cost if I go the used route.

Re: LQ9 power
I thought about it for the swap I'm going to do, but I've read that they don't handle the power as well and its 10x more of a pain in the a$$ to connect them.

Re: LQ9 power
If you can find one paired with an l92 it would work just fine but obviously those are a lot.more expensive too. Not to mention it still doesn't handle the power. If you're just looking for MPG though it would be great.

Re: LQ9 power
I have a 4L80E because:
1) Cheap as dirt on craigslist or in the boneyard 2) Easy as pie to tune them with EFILive or HPT 3) My 80e with a good converter and minimal mods will handle anything I can throw at it, and get me home again.

I would not trust a stock 6L80E behind even a mildly built LQx. That being said, an easy recipe for a 500+fwhp LQ9 is: 799 heads, MS3 cam, F-body accy's, LS6/FAST intake and LT header of your choice. |
