I am definately going to be buying a Chevrolet after reading that.
$16.75 to upgrade to an alternator from a generator at Ford - what are they thinking over there? ;o)

Greg.

As a student of historical truck facts, yes Chevy did have the edge in '63. '63 Ford and Dodge pickups were similar to 59 Chevy trucks. It took till '65 for Ford to have a more competitive product. One note though, Chevy did not a have a fully syncronized 3 speed in their trucks, a major shortcoming especially in an era when most 1/2 tons were sold with 3 speeds. 63-66 Ford pickups came with full syncro 3 speeds.

Re: CONFIDENTIAL 1963 Chevy Vs. Ford.

Ford's biggest vice was they they stayed with the straight axle for too long, and when they finally changed it, they came out with the crappy Twin I-Beam. GM proved early-on that the independent front end was the way to go.

Ford made excellent rear axles (the 9"), but their front suspensions were horrible.

Plus, if you compare a '60s GM truck and a Ford cab, the GM product is double-walled in a lot more places than the Ford. Ford came out with their new design in '67, and it was actually a pretty tough truck, with the exception of the front suspension.

I will say that whoever designed the '67-93 Ford truck door latches did an excellent job. You can go to any clapped out Ford in the wrecking yard and the doors shut beautifully on those things. Very nice engineering.

But, if you own a Ford, you had better know the month it was made, because when you have to order parts for it, you will find out that Ford constantly changed their designs. Who else would make THREE different 351 engines (the Windsor, Cleveland, and the Midland) and hardly anything interchanges between them? Who else would make a 427, a 428, and a 429, all within a 7 year span? Who else would make a C4 transmission with either a large or a small bellhousing, depending on the engine? Who else would design an engine (351 Cleveland) where the cam journals received oil before the crankshaft did?

GM absolutely out-engineered Ford on every level in the '60s.

Yeah, but who needs a synchronized 3 speed when you can double clutch it and drop it into 1st.
