Headlight problems.

I have a 1983 GMC Sierra 2500, a couple weeks ago the headlights started doing weird things like flickering or switching from high to low beams or shutting off completely. (of course when I am on a dark country road while its pouring rain.) I figured the dimmer switch on the floor was bad so i shot for overkill and bought new dimmer switch, new headlight switch, all new headlights and bulbs all around and I took a wire brush to all the contacts and got all the corrosion off and put dialect grease on all of the contacts. well the problem seemed to be fixed but on my way home from work they started flickering again. I figured there must be a short so i spent the whole day chasing wire looking for a short in the wiring. i found one and fixed it. the lights worked fine for about a week then they started flashing again, just the headlights all dash lights marker lights and tail lights work just fine. so now im at a loss and have no idea what else it could be. any ideas? oh and if i shut the lights off for about ten seconds they come right back on but that only last for a minute or two. and when you first turn them on the problem doesn't come up for probably close to ten minutes

Re: Headlight problems.

You need to check the frame ground connected to the passenger headlamp wiring and also the sheetmetal ground on the drivers side. Loose grounds can cause major issues. Also check the terminals in the headlamp connectors. The get loose and brittle over time. I've had recent issues with them. Also check to see if someone has added a headlamp relay kit somewhere near the lamps. If so could be a sticking relay. Here's a link to the wiring diagrams. Hope that helps. http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/sm...c,11766.0.html

Re: Headlight problems.

i just checked all the grounds and they seem to be fine. im not sure if someone added a "headlamp relay kit" there is no relays under the hood however there is a couple in the cab near the fuse box that don't seem to be stock.

You may also want to check the wiring harness that comes through the firewall on the driver's side. Make sure the bolt is tight.

Re: Headlight problems.

As of now I have checked everything. all grounds (checked bolts and cleaned up any corrosion and made sure all bolts were tight) there is not a relay for the headlights and there is no blown fuses. and I have replaced everything. Hopefully after cleaning the grounds the problem will stop. So far everything seems to be working just fine. i checked the wire harness connecting to the firewall as well. the bolt is nice and tight.
