Hopefully somebody can help me

I have a non-square related question hopefully y'all can help me with. I have what a friend of mine believes to be a '78 Trans Am sitting in my garage, I'm watching it for him while he's stationed at Camp Lejeune. I decoded the VIN the other day and it said it was a '78 Firebird that was suppose to have a 231 C.I. V6 under the hood. I know there are serial numbers on the block and transmission, my question is, is there a serial number that ties back to the VIN on the body or something? If so, where would it/them be located?

If you decoded the VIN properly and it's for a 6 then search is over, which engine is in it today doesn't matter, Trans Am didn't have a 6 in 1978, it's a 6 cylinder Firebird period. Post up the partial VIN if you want a double check.
