fuel gauge ohm.'s for a 1966 c10?

i was getting ready to buy a 0 - 90 ohm. sending unit to mount in my aftermarket bed mounted tank, to work with my stock fuel gauge in the dash of my 1966 C10. Then i ran across some info about 2 different ohm. ranges for stock gauges. I know the stock gauge works, turn key on and its says full, ground out sending unit wire and it says empty. Just dont want to buy the wrong sending unit. And tired of getting stuck on the side of the road with my little gas can.

On my 64 I had to buy a sending unit for the remote big truck tank, the guy at the parts store told me there are positive ground units and negative ground units.

xratt--yes, there can be two ohm ranges for our year (seems some '66's got the earlier, is it 0-30 (?) sender). If you have your old sender (assuming it was good) try checking it with an ohm meter. If I remember correctly (at my age, CRS is pretty active, so I can't promise), my '66 has the earlier version

My 65 is for sure 0-30 ohm. I don't know when they changed to 0-90.

You could run 12 volts thru a 30 or 90 ohm resistor to the gage and see what it reads.

0-30 Ohms most pre-1965 GM cars and trucks. 0-90 Ohms most GM cars and trucks 1965-up. Most aftermarket stuff is 0-90 Ohms. Poppy

i have a 1966 c 10 the gas gage go to full when you turn on the key.it has a 1964 mustang tank one wire on the send unit and have any idea

I have researched this issue thoroughly. Thru 1966, the pickups' factory fuel gauges used the 0-to-30 ohm sending unit, definitely. The GM CARS did not correspond with GM PICKUP year-changes; it seems this is where the mix-up came from concerning our pickups.

I've read where one (I don't recall any more, but there may have been.) person had what he thought was a factory sender from a 1966 C10 that had 90 ohms stamped on sender housing; but when he checked it with ohmmeter, it registered 30 ohms at max and near zero ohms at min, when on the float's other extreme.

I have a 63 Chev. that I have installed a set of Dolphin guages in. I have the tank still mounted inside the cab with the stock sending unit. The sending unit sits at a angle on top of the tank and then makes about a 45 degree bend after going down into the tank, the stock sending unit will not work with the guage so my question is has anyone modified the aftermarket sending unit to fit the top of the tank?

I did just this, well took the old sender off the tube and welded the new. Sender to it, I got more pics of the process, pm me if you want them

This may help some of us gain confidence in which info is correct:
FOR STOCK FACTORY GAUGES: I guess we all are familiar with the name of Eckler's for parts--hence we maybe trust them. Look at this link & see for sure that our trucks from 60-66 all used 0-30 ohm sending units. Did not go to 0-90 ohms 'til 1967 on the trucks, even tho' GM cars changed earlier.

Here's another supplier, Car Parts Discount, who shows specifically a 1965 GMC as having 0-27 ohm senders--I guess GMC was a tad more accurate & got it down to the "fine print", being more exact: their gauges prolly did not read beyond "F" when filled like our cheaper Chevies. Naturally, in the grand scheme, 0-27 is practically the same to such a circuit as 0-30 would be.
