Power steering pulley

I can't get the pulleys to line up. I am out about a half inch. Any ideas?

You need a complete set of pulleys to match otherwise you will not match up. All short or all long water pump type depending on which water pump you have. Several threads are this site about this problem with pics. Search..

I have the crankshaft pulley Alan Grove says to use and a stock single pump pulley for the short water pump. What pulleys do I use?

Press fit pulley? Thought it could be adjusted by how deep you press it on, otherwise keyed pullys come in different offsets. I'm not an expert though.

Did they ever line up or are you adding pulleys?

No the pump is an old style with a bolt instead of press on style.

I just went through this mess. Make sure that the rubber that holds the pulley to the center of the harmonic balancer isn't cracked and broken. It threw mine out by 3/8" or more and it was a pain to diagnose. GL!

water pump and crank are inline?

Yes they are both in line, it is the pump pulley that will not line up with the crank

So again, if it's a press on pulley I belief you should adjust depth there. Do you have the Pulley installer/removal tool? Look at pulley install directions, they say to install to a depth for alignment.

Just got done with this morass myself - agree with the poster that you need a whole set of pulleys. When you say that the ps pump is 1/2" off, is it 1/2" out, i.e. toward the radiator? I eventually solved my problem by putting a triple crank pulley on. The alternator and water pump go on the inner ring and the ps pump goes on the outer one. The middle one is blank - maybe for if/when I put a/c in...

Also, your PS bracket may need to be replaced.

Hard to diagnose any of this without pics...

It is not a press on pulley, and it is one grove out toward the radiator. I guess another crank pulley might work. Thanks for the help

Oh by the way, after fooling with it a couple of hours, just took it off so no pictures.

Try a triple crank pulley then - the one I used is Spectre 4401.

BTW. New pullys are no guarantee. The pullys assume certain brackets for your alt and power steering. Because you have a Saginaw P pump (keyway type), the PO may have changed the bracket for the pump as well... For keyway type pullys there are varying offsets available. Did you contact Alan Grove Industries? With no pics, everybody here can take stabs at what could be wrong... but getting it straight from the manufacturer would help a lot.

talked with Alan Grove yesterday, and they advised I had the right pulley's for the pump but must have a 6 cylinder bracket or something. They had no idea what to do. My buddy ground down the cast bracket I had and got the 2 groove pulley I had to work, so the next good weather Saturday we have we will give that a try. Thanks
