question about bolts?

What are you guys using for bolts in a restoration?I'm referring to bolts for the front end and bolts for the bed and maybe some miscellaneous bolts for under the dashboard type stuff. I have plenty of rusted ones, I was considering getting a kit from: the Eastwood company. Its called a tin zinc plating kit. I was going to glass bead my bolts, and then plate them. I can't believe how many bolts this truck actually has. And when I took my truck apart I did not label any of them, whoops.

I replaced all the bed bolts on the '65 I restored with new ones, and will do the same for my '66. For the underhood and sheetmetal bolts, I blasted them and painted them with a zinc-look paint. It's time consuming though. I might try to round up as many original bolts as I can find and send them off to be zinc or white cad plated for my '66 when I get to that point.

God is in the details, they say. One way to hike up the cheese factor in restoration work is to do it all with Home Depot bolts. Using correctly shaped hardware with the proper head marks makes a big difference in appearance to those that care to look. I'd save as many originals as possible during the tear-down stage.

Ditto, the last trip to the wrecking yard for truck parts I grabbed as many bolts as I could find that wasn`t trashed, for future paint and detail work....

My work is not cheesy by any means, I just prefer new hardware when reassembling, but I am not going to 100% original, either. I admire the ones that do it, just not for me.

I use alot of the stainless button head allen bolts with internal star lock washers(they are the same OD as the bolt heads for a clean look. I found some new "black chrome" hardware locally, that I am experimenting with to see if i like the look or not.

I just glass bead blast mine and clean them up with steel wool. It is a pain though trying to be correct when it comes to bolts. I had dozens of 3/8" ones but I could not find 2 for the water neck that matched so had to break down and buy a couple. It definitely is a whole lot harder trying to be correct but I am also not going for points at a car show either and plan on driving it so I bend the rules sometimes.I used all grade 8 hardware on the frame and crossmembers so I know that is far from correct but I like the look.

PS, if you want a shock go look at correct bolts on ebay, you could be 400.00 in engine bolts alone with proper markings.

Thanks guys for the responses. I am trying to stay original. I just cant believe how many small fasteners that are on my truck. I am in the reassembly stage. I really would have liked to start a build thread, but i am so busy, i just dont have time to devote to that. I am behind the 8 ball here. I want to be done by the end of july for a local car show. I have a lot to buy yet. I dont know if i have time to be replaying. I might just blast em and have someone zinc plate them. I had a local plater do some other stuff and was happy. I should have done this stuff years ago.

has anyone used the "restoration bolt kits" that supposedly have all the fasteners needed for a restoration?

The answer is no because they are stainless and are button head Alan bolts.

Every time I go to pick n pull, I grab as many bolts as I can. Specific stuff I need go on a list (IE, fuel pump bolts) then I grab them when I can. I find most fasteners work from trucks up to '79 or whenever GM went metric.

I blast and paint them semigloss black.

I'm one of those weird fellows that like a brand new fastener, every time. It gets pricey at times but I know its new and it gives me piece of mind. Especially for the frame and suspension hardware.
