Post pics of engine number location

I have a 1965 283 and stamped on the block in the front left corner above water pump mount is FIIIOWE but can't find any other numbers. What is FIIIOWE anyway?? I have a PG, is it under the shift linkage on the block? Can someone please post a pic where the actual number is??

I`m only guessing here that what you have is a FHIOWE, which would denote that as a `69 327-235 horse according to Hollander, they never used the I as it was confused with the number one.

F means motor was built in Flint Michigan.
1110 means built october 11th.
WE means 65 283 manual tranny or 68 307 with a powerglide.
There's also a casting number behind the drivers side head that will narrow it down and on the pass side behind the head is a 4 numeral number which is your casting date.
Look here.

Oh ok, I see that. It did come with a 283 175hp and a PG factory. Its on the build sheet I found under the seat. PO said it had a rebuilt engine but I wondered if it was original or just rebuilt small block and swapped out.

Ok, something interesting. The chart states 2 bbl but mine has a 4 bbl 4GC. I put a Edelbrock 1404 500 CFM on in its place that really works perfect. But my engine is painted blue and when I took the carb off the manifold was orange. So maybe the 4 bbl was added at the time of the rebuild? We're the truck engines bluish or were they all chevy orange?

All 283's were grey and they all had 2 barrels. If there is an E after the W then it is correct, I couldn't see one in the pic.

Yes, its faint but there is an E. The Stamp looks so good it looks like a new stamp, thought that was odd. Do you have any pics of the grey??

It could have been decked and re-stamped. Most of the time shops dont take the time to re-stamp tho.
